Sitting just off US-40 within Arapaho National Forest, Idlewild Campground runs along the Fraser River and the Fraser River Trail, a paved greenway that connects the campground directly to Winter Park on foot or by bike. The sites are set among trees, providing shade but no open sightlines toward the surrounding mountains. Highway proximity is the defining trade-off here: campers consistently note that road noise, and occasionally passing trains, carries through the site at all hours.
Not all sites are equal. The reserved sites require driving a one-lane dirt road that is moderately steep and rutted, while most first-come, first-served sites sit closer to the highway. Sites near the river, particularly site 19, which sits directly on the water, give campers the sound of the Fraser through the night. Sites are on the small side, and larger rigs will have difficulty fitting. Mosquitoes can be significant, especially in wetter summers, so bug spray is worth packing.
Amenities include drinking water, vault toilets, trash service, and a camp host who sells firewood by the bin rather than the bundle. T-Mobile users have reported 5G coverage in at least one site. Kerri H. notes the vault toilets were "well maintained" during her stay. The campground runs from May through September, has no pet policy, and does not allow pets on site. Campers who want more distance from the highway might look at FR 128 Dispersed — Arapaho NF near Winter Park as an alternative. For those who want established amenities and walkable access to town, Idlewild fits that specific need.
