Upper Soda Springs Campground sits at 7,800 feet elevation along the San Joaquin River, accessed via a quarter-mile dirt road off the main route into Devils Postpile National Monument. The Forest Service operates this first-come, first-served facility with 28 sites accommodating RVs up to moderate lengths, though no hookups or dump stations are available on-site.
The campground provides direct river access for fly fishing along the San Joaquin, with several sites positioned close enough to hear flowing water. Two hiking trails depart directly from the campground, including access to the Pacific Crest Trail. Erin M. notes there's "plenty of shade and access to the river for spectacular fishing." The 4-mile trail to Devils Postpile and Rainbow Falls begins here, while nearby Scotcher Lake offers additional angling opportunities.
Facilities include vault toilets, potable water, bear boxes at each site, and a camp host who sells firewood and provides area information. Cell phone service is nonexistent throughout the valley. The location requires an adventure pass, available at the entrance station starting at 7 AM or in advance from Mammoth Lakes. Wildlife activity is common, with deer frequently spotted near campsites in early morning hours.
For alternative options in the area, campers can explore camping near Inyo National Forest when this facility reopens.
