Fly fishing enthusiasts will find direct access to the San Joaquin River at this Forest Service campground, where several sites sit close enough to hear the water flow. Upper Soda Springs operates at 7,800 feet elevation among lodgepole pine, western white pine, and red and white fir trees that provide shade across most sites.
The campground accommodates RVs up to at least 18 feet, with water hookups available but no dump station on-site. A quarter-mile dirt road leads from the main route to the camping area, and reviewers consistently mention the rough access conditions. Most sites can handle trailers, though the road surface requires careful navigation. Bear boxes are provided at each site, as this area sees active wildlife including deer that approach campsites in early morning hours.
Two hiking trails begin directly from the campground, including access to the Pacific Crest Trail. The Devils Postpile formation sits about four miles away on foot. Scoot M. notes that "bathrooms were cleaned daily and easily accessible." A camp host typically provides information about local fishing spots and sells firewood. Cell phone service is unavailable throughout the area.
Sites operate on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservations accepted. Campers seeking additional options can explore campgrounds around Inyo National Forest or check nearby Devils Postpile for alternatives.
