Shake Camp - State Forest

Large redwood trees tower above Shake Camp, which sits at $15 per night within Mountain Home Demonstration State Forest under California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection management. The campground provides spacious sites with fire rings and vault toilets, though one reviewer noted fly issues in the restrooms and mosquito activity during their June visit.

Several hiking trails start from the campground, including a 2.7-mile walk to Hidden Falls when the gate remains closed to vehicles. Guided horseback rides operate nearby. Campers can bring pets and should pack insect repellent for the most comfortable stay.

Beautiful

This was our first time to camp here. What a gem of a place! Nestled among the giant redwoods and right at the center of several hiking trails if that’s your scene. Only $15 a night! Big campsites, vault toilets and fire rings. We spent 3 nights here. Nearby are horses you can rent for guided rides. At the moment the gate to Hidden Falls is closed but you can walk in, which we did and it was beautiful!!! 2.7 miles each way. Only 2 negatives...mosquitoes and the vaults had a fly problem. So next trip there I’m going to research on more ways to keep mosquitoes away and bring a fly fogger for the vault.
