Free dispersed camping in Los Padres National Forest comes with one important restriction to know before driving out: camping along Highway 33, the Rose Valley Recreation Area, Pine Mountain Recreation Area, and Matilija Canyon Road is not permitted. This area sits adjacent to the Chorro Grande Trail, a roughly nine-mile route. Campers who head uphill from the trailhead corridor find sites with open sightlines toward sunrise and sunset, away from the roadside parking that fills up with day hikers. Pets are allowed. Reyes Peak Campground is a developed alternative about 2.9 miles northeast for campers who want a designated site.
