Gunshots echo through the night at this free BLM dispersed camping area along French Gulch Road, where target shooting is a popular activity among visitors. Multiple camping spots spread along a gravel road that follows a creek for about two miles before reaching private property. The narrow, one-lane bridge marks the entrance to the area, with options to turn left toward a small group clearing or right along the longer creek-side route.
Road conditions vary significantly throughout the area. While some sections offer smooth, wide gravel suitable for larger RVs up to 45 feet, other stretches feature bumpy surfaces with low-hanging branches that challenge taller rigs. Casey B. found "the circular driveway was tight and had very little space" at one waterside spot. Sites closest to the creek fill first, while others sit in open fields with full sun exposure.
Cell service remains nonexistent for most carriers, though signal boosters may provide weak coverage for some networks. The area shows signs of heavy local use, with ammunition casings and target shooting debris scattered throughout. Ticks pose a concern during warmer months. For additional options, campers can explore camping near French Gulch or visit nearby Oak Bottom Tent Campground — Whiskeytown-Shasta-Trinity National Recreation Area for developed facilities.
Bring insect repellent and expect noise from recreational shooting, especially on weekends.
