Abandoned campground-free

We stayed here 6/28 during a windstorm! We had to cut a tree out of the way of the road to access. It’s an old abandoned camp that is now free to use because it is no longer maintained. There are a few picnic tables and lots of trees. Road around camp is still drivable.
It’s a good alternative to the nearby Tolkan if you are looking for something more remote and of course, totally free and borderline “dispersed”.
There were many good sites available when we were there as there was only 1 other person there.

Frequently Asked Questions

What amenities and facilities are available at Horse Mountain Campground?

Horse Mountain Campground offers very basic facilities as it's no longer maintained. You'll find a few picnic tables scattered throughout the area and plenty of trees providing natural shade. Since it's an abandoned camp, don't expect standard campground amenities like water, electricity, or maintained restrooms. The site operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no fee required. Campers should prepare to be self-sufficient by bringing all necessary supplies including water, waste disposal bags, and other camping essentials.

Where is Horse Mountain Campground located and how do I access it?

Horse Mountain Campground is an abandoned campground that is now available for free camping. The access road may be challenging, particularly during adverse weather conditions like windstorms when fallen trees might block the route. The road around the campground is still drivable, though you should be prepared for potential obstacles. As an unmaintained site, consider bringing tools like a saw for clearing your path if necessary. It serves as a good alternative camping option when other locations are full or unavailable.

Are there creek access points or water features at Horse Mountain Campground?

While the name suggests a creek may be nearby, specific water features or creek access points at Horse Mountain Campground aren't clearly defined. As this is an unmaintained, abandoned campground, any water sources that might exist should not be relied upon for drinking water. Campers should bring all their own water for drinking, cooking, and cleaning purposes. If exploring for creek access, take proper precautions as these areas would be completely unmaintained. Check local conditions before your visit, especially during dry seasons when water sources may be limited or nonexistent.
