We didn’t get much time to explore because we were only here very briefly, from midnight-7 or 8 am the next morning. We were able to find plenty of camp spots for our off road trailer but I bet any trailer could make it as the road was not crazy bumpy or anything. I remember it was super windy! Not sure if that is a constant thing or just unlucky weather for us. We may end up cramping there again on the way back to Colorado!
This was such a unique camping experience. The pictures do all of the talking. The road to reach the beach is only about 5 miles long, but It will take you around 45 minutes! We felt like we were driving through Jurassic park to get there. Speaking of Jurassic park, you will need a decent clearance vehicle. We have an overland tent on a truck so we were having a blast! Will definitely return. Hopefully next time will see some elk because we weren’t lucky this time :)
Just passed the camp and it looks really nice
This camp was where we stayed when we were trying to stay at Tolkan but it was full. Not yet knowing about the dispersed site at horse mountain just a bit further up the road from Tolkan we stayed here.
We arrived late and spent just one night but it had everything we needed. We found a spot easily and bathrooms were close.
Lots of little mosquitoes trying to suck our blood 😅 so bring bug spray as it’s by a lush stream!! $8 per night
We stayed here 6/28 during a windstorm! We had to cut a tree out of the way of the road to access. It’s an old abandoned camp that is now free to use because it is no longer maintained. There are a few picnic tables and lots of trees. Road around camp is still drivable.
It’s a good alternative to the nearby Tolkan if you are looking for something more remote and of course, totally free and borderline “dispersed”.
There were many good sites available when we were there as there was only 1 other person there.
We were out scouting around for a place to pop up our tent and this spot was great! Note that if you are pulling something later behind your vehicle you might not be able to make it down the road as there is a super tight switchback on a canyon ledge gravel road. We have a truck so we were good. There was hardly anyone there on Father’s Day weekend. Camping here you are nestled in the canyon and surrounded by huge rock formations. There is a fire pit as well as a picnic table at each site. There are a few “ledge” campgrounds but because of Covid every other one is closed. It’s fun to drive down the gravel road to scout out the various open sites. We settled on Ledge B I believe it was. Lots of bugs at night and the bats come around to swoop them up. Was super fun to watch! Bring your own shade :)
