Dirt Flat

A long, narrow dirt road leads into Dirt Flat, a small tent-only campground set within Stanislaus National Forest along the Merced River corridor outside El Portal. The road itself is a notable factor: reviewers flag it as narrow enough that vehicles over 25 feet cannot safely turn around, so this site works best for tent campers arriving by car, on foot, or by boat. At night, the darkness here is complete.

The campground has just four tent sites, and the Merced River runs directly alongside them. Highway 140 sits across the river, so some road noise carries through, though most campers find it manageable. Site 2 gets the most shade, which matters in summer when temperatures climb. Alicia W. describes it as "pretty basic campground, pit toilet and water spigots available," which is an accurate summary of what to expect. Campfires are allowed, and pets are welcome.

Campers should verify current status before visiting. A May 2024 report noted the campground had been closed for over a year, with no camping signs posted and no facilities in service. Reservations are available when the site is open, with nightly rates running $41 to $43. Dry Gulch and Indian Flat RV Park are nearby alternatives if Dirt Flat is unavailable. This site suits tent campers who want direct river access and proximity to Yosemite's western entrance without the crowds of larger campgrounds.
