Caples Lake Campground

Fishing enthusiasts will find direct access to Caples Lake just across the highway from this Forest Service campground. The site sits at high elevation within Eldorado National Forest, where daily temperatures may reach 90°F when valley areas hit 100°F. Rocky terrain with boulders and slate characterizes the campground layout.

Vault toilets serve the facility year-round, as plumbing would freeze during winter months when snow covers the area. Some sites experience road noise from the adjacent highway, while others offer quieter positioning. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with hosts maintaining order. Water availability varies by season, and the no-pets policy applies to all campers seeking places to camp near Kirkwood.

Close to the top of the world

This is a high elevation campground located across the highway from Caples Lake and Reservoir.

In winter it is snowed over creating a majestic sight.

In summer it just as spectacular. Very clear and very cold.

Fishing is the sport here. No speedboats.

Campground is riddled with boulders and slate rocks. Daily temp might reach 90f when its 100f in the valley.

Can get windy.

Vault toilets as plumbing would freeze and burst in winter.

Nice location, right on the hwy though

This is a nice location in that it's right across the road from Caples Lake. There can be a lot of road noise depending on your site as some sit right along the highway. Stayed here many times in various sites. There is a lot of hiking in the area, and several lakes. Vault toilets, picnic tables, grills, fire rings. May or may not have water. Hosts are nice and keep it quiet.
