Close to the top of the world

This is a high elevation campground located across the highway from Caples Lake and Reservoir.

In winter it is snowed over creating a majestic sight.

In summer it just as spectacular. Very clear and very cold.

Fishing is the sport here. No speedboats.

Campground is riddled with boulders and slate rocks. Daily temp might reach 90f when its 100f in the valley.

Can get windy.

Vault toilets as plumbing would freeze and burst in winter.

Nice location, right on the hwy though

This is a nice location in that it's right across the road from Caples Lake. There can be a lot of road noise depending on your site as some sit right along the highway. Stayed here many times in various sites. There is a lot of hiking in the area, and several lakes. Vault toilets, picnic tables, grills, fire rings. May or may not have water. Hosts are nice and keep it quiet.

Caples Lake Campground receives positive feedback for its beautiful high-elevation setting right across from Caples Lake. Campers appreciate the convenient lake access and scenic surroundings. Some sites are situated close to the highway, which can create road noise depending on your location. The campground features a natural setting with boulder-strewn grounds. With generally clean facilities and proximity to various outdoor activities, it makes for a pleasant camping experience, though visitors should be prepared for typical rustic national forest camping conditions.

What activities are available at Caples Lake Campground and the surrounding area?

Fishing is the primary activity at Caples Lake, with the crystal clear but very cold water holding various trout species. The lake prohibits speedboats, creating a peaceful atmosphere for paddleboarding and non-motorized boating. Numerous hiking trails wind through the surrounding area, providing access to additional alpine lakes and mountain vistas. The higher elevation location makes it excellent for nature photography, wildlife viewing, and stargazing. During winter months, the snowed-over landscape transforms for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing opportunities, though the campground itself is closed.

How do I make reservations at Caples Lake Campground?

Caples Lake Campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no advance reservation system. To secure a site, arrive early, especially during peak summer weekends and holidays when the campground fills quickly. Have payment ready upon arrival. What amenities and facilities are available at Caples Lake Campground?

Caples Lake Campground offers basic amenities typical of a rustic forest service campground. Facilities include vault toilets (no flush toilets or showers) and picnic tables at each site. The campground is situated in a natural setting with boulders throughout the grounds. Potable water may be available seasonally, but it's advisable to bring your own. Each site has a fire ring, though fire restrictions may apply depending on conditions. The campground's high elevation location means weather can change rapidly, so come prepared with appropriate gear even in summer.
