Great location for TRT

Great location to the TRT. Stayed here the night before getting on the TRT. Very quiet and plenty of sites open. Down side is all the used TP along the logs. Please leave no trace behind or use the clean pit toilets. Definitely will come back to this campground. The creek is nice.

No RVS!!!

Holy Christ for the love of god take away the rv tag. There isn’t a single spot for an rv, I tried it with my 19’ single axle unit and nearly ripped the spare tire off the back the road was so steep.

Seems wonderful for tent campers!

Extremely Crowded

Luther pass, aka South/North Truckee Rd, was extremely crowded. I would suggest arriving early to get a decent spot. We ended up going onto North Truckee Rd and found a pull off wide enough for our truck and rooftop tent.

South Truckee Rd did have toilets about the halfway point of the approximately 2-3 mile long loop. Be mindful that this some spots are right next to a busy Highway.

Overall, would return again and arrive at an earlier time.

Great location

Stayed here for two nights. Several others around, but it was quiet & safe. Pit toilets, and river water nearby. Ranger came by early evening to say you’re only supposed to camp in the designated sites, but never returned to enforce the rule, so I was fine sleeping in my car in a small dirt pull out. Great access to the TRT and close to Lake Tahoe.

Great spot

This is an awesome spot however, the coordinates did not take us to the correct location. There is a sign for camping and the coordinates wanted to take us a quarter mile up the road where there was barely even a pull out. We turned back and checked out the other camp and it was perfect!

20 minute drive from the lake, gorgeous nature, lots of wildlife, and a creek running right by camp which makes for easy sleeping!

Secluded

Bathrooms located central to the sites, very spacious and dispersed. Awesome location partway up the mountains.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Luther Pass Campground located and how do I get there?

Luther Pass Campground is located near the Big Meadow trailhead along Luther Pass, which connects Highway 89 with Highway 88 in the Lake Tahoe area. The campground sits partway up the mountains, offering a scenic location that provides good access to the Tahoe Rim Trail. Look for the designated camping sign as some GPS coordinates may be inaccurate. The campground is sometimes referred to as being on South/North Truckee Road. Arriving early is recommended as the 12 sites fill quickly, especially during peak season.

Is dispersed camping allowed at Luther Pass and what areas are available?

Dispersed camping is available at Luther Pass, with designated sites along both South and North Truckee Roads. Rangers recommend camping only in the designated areas, which extend approximately along the roads. The area offers several pull-offs suitable for camping, though they fill quickly during busy periods. Some campers find spots along North Truckee Road when the main area is full. Remember to practice Leave No Trace principles, as inappropriate waste disposal has been an issue in some areas. The campground provides pit toilets that should be used instead of leaving waste in the wilderness.

What amenities and facilities are available at Luther Pass Campground?

Luther Pass Campground offers basic amenities for a rustic camping experience. Facilities include centrally located pit toilets, garbage collection, fire rings, and picnic tables at each site. There is no potable water available, so campers need to bring their own supply. The sites are spacious and nicely dispersed, providing a good balance of privacy and community. A creek runs nearby, offering a natural water source (which should be properly filtered before use). The campground's simple setup makes it ideal for those seeking a more primitive camping experience.

Is Luther Pass Campground a good alternative to free camping near Lake Tahoe?

Luther Pass Campground is an excellent alternative to other free camping options near Lake Tahoe. Its location partway up the mountains provides cooler temperatures and beautiful surroundings while being just 20 minutes from popular lake destinations. The campground offers a quiet, safe environment with basic amenities like pit toilets and fire rings that many dispersed areas lack. Its proximity to the Tahoe Rim Trail makes it particularly appealing for hikers. The spacious, dispersed sites provide a more peaceful experience than some of the crowded areas closer to the lake, though arriving early is essential during peak seasons to secure a spot.

Can I bring my trailer or RV to Luther Pass dispersed camping areas?

Luther Pass dispersed camping areas are not suitable for RVs or trailers. The access roads are steep and challenging, with numerous reports of difficulties even for smaller trailers. One camper with a 19-foot single-axle trailer experienced significant problems and nearly damaged their vehicle. While the area offers wonderful opportunities for tent camping, the terrain and limited space at pull-offs make it impractical for most wheeled camping setups. Those with rooftop tents on trucks have successfully found suitable spots, but conventional trailers and RVs should seek alternative campgrounds with proper facilities and access.
