Gravel under the tires and ponderosa pines closing in on both sides: that's the immediate experience of turning off Highway 89A onto Forest Service Road 225, roughly two to three miles from Jacob Lake. The road is clearly signed from the highway, and the first usable campsites appear within the first mile, set among the trees with enough space for larger rigs. One reviewer confirmed a 35-foot fifth wheel had no trouble finding a workable spot after driving about a mile in.
Road conditions deserve attention before you go. The gravel surface develops ruts and rough patches, and several campers note the southbound section can be rough enough to pose a real challenge for low-clearance vehicles. Wet weather makes it worse. Sites themselves are large and open, with established fire pits at some locations and firewood available in the surrounding forest. No toilets or other facilities are on-site. Wildlife is present in the area, and at least one camper reported hearing what sounded like wolves at night, worth keeping in mind if you're camping with dogs.
Cell coverage varies by position. AT&T users report a usable signal, and Starlink works without issue, but reception improves noticeably on the flatter ridge sections toward the upper part of the road. Road 225 is also part of the Great Western motorized trail. Dispersed camping here follows standard Forest Service rules: camp along an open road as shown on the Motor Vehicle Use Map, and stay at least one mile from a developed recreation site. The FS Road #257 Dispersed Camping area sits just across Highway 89A for additional reference. This spot works well for self-sufficient campers with high-clearance vehicles who want free, low-structure camping within Kaibab National Forest.
