Forest Road 535 - East

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Hikers heading to the West Fork of Oak Creek will find Forest Road 535 - East a practical base camp, set within ponderosa pine forest in Coconino National Forest outside Munds Park, Arizona. The road climbs through thick tree cover, with dispersed sites scattered along its length. Some highway noise carries in from below, though reviewers note it fades by evening and isn't especially intrusive during the night.

Road conditions are the most important factor to understand before arriving. Low-clearance vehicles can make it in, as one reviewer confirmed reaching a site in a Honda Civic, but the road is rocky and requires slow, careful driving. RV users should expect to travel roughly half a mile or more before finding a reasonably level spot, and not all sites are accessible for larger rigs despite the big-rig-friendly designation. Site leveling is a recurring challenge, particularly for trailers.

Crowds pick up quickly, especially on weekends and even some weekdays. Arriving by late afternoon may mean limited options for flatter ground. Those who drive further up the road tend to find more solitude, and some spots near the top look out over the valley below. Fire rings are present at some sites. Cell service is available. Pumphouse Wash (FR 237) Dispersed Camping Area sits less than a mile away and is worth checking if this road is full or closed, as seasonal closures have been reported.

Campers regularly cited beautiful forest scenery and peaceful surroundings with plenty of available sites. Road conditions are challenging and many spots are uneven, making RV access difficult.

Rough rocky spots

Close to everything and lots of spots. But many are rough and rocky and challenging to level the 25 foot trailer. Lots of traffic. But I’d tru this place again

Not far from Sedona and right off 89

Very busy on a Thursday but there are a lot of spots. I would still recommend getting there early because I got there at 5:00 and a ton of people were still going up after me. I only went about a third of the way up. Nice crisp weather for sleeping after hot days in Sedona.

Close to highway, pleasant location

I just wanted to get something free and close to the West fork of oak Creek. This fit the bill. I was able to get into this site in my Honda Civic, although it is a little bit rough and you need to drive carefully. There were several other people staying nearby. There is some noise from the highway but it isn't bad and there isn't a lot of traffic. And it is in a fairly thick ponderosa Forest

Road to campsite closed

Went to camp here for the night, but the road in has been closed. It could be weather/seasonal, I don't know.

Nice forest, but rocky road

We had to drive in about a half mile in our Class C to find a reasonably level spot. Road was rocky and slow going. Many sites uneven and/or inaccessible for RVs. Lots of tent campers. Nice forest with fire rings.

Nice quiet spot

Plenty of sites up this road although not all level. Surrounded by trees. Some traffic up and down the road but that settled by evening. We couldn’t hear the highway. Recommended.
