Windy and beautiful

Campground is somewhat exposed to wind. Trails lead out from campground to canyons and peaks. Clean pit toilets, no water. There's a horse corral with four pens. Road up is dirt/rock -- could by tough with snow/rain. Several stretches are one lane with occasional turnouts. Wind was very strong so ended up going back down the road to the better-protected Reef Townsite Campground.

Frequently Asked Questions

What amenities are available at Carr Canyon Campground?

Carr Canyon Campground offers basic amenities for a rustic camping experience. The facilities include clean pit toilets, but there is no water available on site, so campers must bring their own supply. A unique feature is the horse corral with four pens, making this a good option for those traveling with horses. The campground has designated camping sites, though they are somewhat exposed to wind. Be prepared for a primitive experience with limited facilities, perfect for those seeking a more natural outdoor setting.

What is the best time of year to visit Carr Canyon Campground?

The ideal time to visit Carr Canyon Campground is during spring and fall when temperatures are moderate and conditions are most pleasant. Summer can be enjoyable at this higher elevation, though afternoon thunderstorms may occur. Winter visits are possible but challenging due to the dirt/rock access road that could become difficult or impassable with snow or rain. Strong winds can be an issue year-round, particularly during seasonal transitions, so secure equipment accordingly. Always check weather forecasts and road conditions before heading up the canyon.

How do I make reservations for Carr Canyon Campground?

Carr Canyon Campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no advance reservation system. To secure a spot, simply arrive at the campground and select an available site. Since the campground is relatively remote with limited sites, arriving early, especially during weekends or peak seasons, is recommended. For current availability information and any potential changes to the reservation policy, contact the Coronado National Forest office that manages this campground.

What hiking trails are accessible from Carr Canyon Campground?

Several hiking trails lead directly from Carr Canyon Campground, offering access to the surrounding canyons and peaks. These trails provide excellent opportunities to explore the Huachuca Mountains and take in panoramic views of the area. The trail system connects to various destinations within the canyon and up to higher elevations. Difficulty levels vary, accommodating both casual day hikers and more experienced trekkers seeking challenging terrain. Bring adequate water, sun protection, and sturdy footwear, as the area is exposed with potentially strong winds and variable weather conditions.
