Stephen F. Austin State Park Campground

This is a great park to overnight or stay a couple days. It's very quiet. And the hiking trails are well maintained. AT&T coverage is weak.

This park may be on the smaller side, but it’s full of charm!🌿 The trails are peaceful and great for spotting wildlife, while the shady trees make it perfect for hammocks or picnics. The campsites feel cozy yet spacious, and sprunki, clean, well-kept facilities make the whole experience even more enjoyable. A hidden gem worth visiting!✨

Aside from the fact that the park is very well maintained and there is an abundance of wildlife, you get pull through sites with full hook ups on the cheap! I have a State Parks Pass which makes it even more affordable. While we were there we saw an abundance of deer and bunnies, plus we were able to listen in on a conversation between a very large owl who had taken up residence in one of the trees by our site, and a long distance friend several sites down (judging by the difference in volume).

Add to this the little extras - a separate email from the park staff allowing me to go ahead and have them print my reservation and have it waiting for me - a great feature because we got on after the park office had closed, and you have a great experience. Love it and will be back very soon!!!

Only spent a night here, but it was VERY quiet, completely dead-flat level site, with electric (30 amp). Beware of fire ants. Woke up to a beautiful fog in morning. Would return and explore. Saw numerous trails that looked easy, and tree/shade covered. Gate open 0800 to 2200. No campsites near river. Campground contacted us to inquire when we'd arrive (it was late) and confirmed we'd checked in before staff left. Generators not allowed, yay.

Nice clean state park.The camping areas were mode.Real nice there's barbecue grills there. I had 5G network with T-Mobile and good TV reception. The bathrooms weren't the cleanest.

Nice state park just west of Houston. Lots of hiking trails through here. Sites are spaced well apart and are private. We just stayed one night as we are headed to Big Bend, so didn’t explore too much.

Staff is awesome and helped us get in for a late check in. Spots have hook ups and great for a night passing through the houston area.

The pull through site was nice with plenty of shade. The site are far enough apart so you don’t feel you are in top of your neighbors. There was a fire ban at the time of our visit so we weren’t able to enjoy the fire pit. The near by visitor center was interesting.

We have been to this park twice.  Once as our very first trip with our travel trailer (Site 24), and once again this year (Site 13).  This park is really nice for hiking, biking, or just relaxing.

Great trails for all exercise levels.  Lots of places to stop and rest, or just sit and take in nature for a while.

Just be careful, if Google GPS tries to take you to the back gate... :)  It's a tiny road, and a dead end.

The nicest and warmest bath house so far. The park is awesome. If one is near it’s a must stay.

Very nice FHU pull thru sites with 5 camp hosts, who, according to signage, they clean the toilets and shower facilities. Quiet NYE weekend with 10 FHU sites vacant! Two New toilet/shower facilities for campgrounds. A herd of whitetail deer wanders thru campground in morning and evening.

The walk-in sites were excellent and much less cramped than the regular camping sites! The park was clean, the trails were beautiful. The only thing is that all of the trees in the park are dead because of some disease or bug infestation. The site we were at had a utility light that was on all night that was the only downside.

We got a spot here for one night with no reservations on a Thursday in late March, but all the spots were booked for the weekend. With taxes and fees the price came to $38 for a night at a FHU site.

All sites are pull through / bump out style. Our spot (#39) wasn't level. Spots come with a picnic table and fire pit.

Firewood and ice for sale here at campground.

Free showers are really nice and clean, look pretty new. Water never got hot for me though.

Friendly rangers at the office when we checked in, and they had lots of cute things to buy at the gift shop.

Dumpsters and aluminum can recycling.

Ok cell reception, not many bars but both the att and Verizon phone worked fine. We heard the rangers tell other campers that there is free wifi at the campground but we didn't see it pop up when we looked for it.

Lots of nice short hiking trails here throughout the park.

Park is amazing in February, very temperate climate and zero bugs this time of year.

Park was fully booked, extensive camping scene everywhere you look, loved the vibe. Staff were mindful and polite. Not much to do here except for camping and hiking trails, some of which are washed out during the summer when the Brazos river floods, only the Opossum loop was closed for this stay.

Site was right next to brand new restrooms, which were heated with showers.

Heard several coyotes and a few donkeys overnight. Very active wildlife for the amount of people there.

Would recommend anytime the dry Canadian air graces our state.

this is one of my favorite parks since it is close to home and is not that big for a weekend getaway is perfect

The park was great. Very big and shaded with lots a trees. Only downside was there was absolutely no wind, it was excruciatingly humid and there were LOADS of huge spiders. We went close to the end of summer and it was still 80+ with 90% humidity. It would have been great if we could have been more prepared, but when you’re focused on getting there, you forget some things. Aside from that, it offered us a fire pit, water spout, picnic area and plenty space for our tent and supplies.

I visited the park early November and it was great. We reserved sites 75 and 52, and it was a great area for kids. Fall camping is very popular in Texas, so tons of people out especially boy scouts.  We hiked Barred Owl trail and it was very easy pushing my double jogging stroller. The one thing i loved about the park were the restroom, LOVED the FAMILY RESTROOM. Loved that it was one private room restroom and shower. Overall, I enjoyed the park.

All of the sites at Stephen F. Austin were pull through and full hookup which was really nice. Our first night there we went in to town to explore and hit up the local grocery store. We loved the downtown area.  More importantly, the campsites were hosts to a lovely firefly display each evening!  Not sure when specifically this happens, but we were there in March and it was awesome.  We used this as a base for exploring Houston and it was quite the drive, but the campground was awesome.  Definitely recommend!

We spent Christmas Eve here in a cabin and had a wonderful time! not only was every single shelter/cabin site around us empty so we truly felt like we were disconnected from urban life, but we got to see wildlife! lots and lots of deer and owls. Bathrooms near cabins were under construction so we used porta potties, but they were nice all things considered. there was a foot-pumped faucet for washing hands outside.  trails at the park were nice and mostly shaded. cool view of the Brazos river

Nice location near the Brazos River. Easy to reach from Houston or San Antonio. Beautiful mossy trees

Full hookups with 30 amps. Semi circle drive thru that fit my 44 ft motorhome and towed Jeep. Deer all over and saw a 6 point buck. Very dark with no lighting. We arrived around midnight and was a little difficult finding our spot. Fire pit and plenty of room.

Fun little campground in the river! Great for hikes in the shady trees, or even a bike ride!

Going to this camp in the middle of August is not recommended because, wow Texas heat. But it is one of our favorites. Close to Houston but still feels wild. I love that the RV camp is pretty separate from the ten camp section to make it a different experience depending on how you normally roll. The trails are well kept and we saw some deer and rabbits! Do watch out here because there are ticks a plenty, make sure to do a check after hikes/camping!

We stopped for one night on our way to El Campo. We will be back for a weekend to further enjoy.

Restroom/showers are dated, but are extremely clean. Rangers and Staff are very nice as well.

Firewood is sold onsite for $1 per log.
