Hiking trails wind through five miles of flat terrain toward the Brazos River at Stephen F. Austin State Park, giving campers a low-effort way to spot deer, owls, bobcats, and the occasional coyote without straying far from their site. Wildlife sightings are common throughout the day, with deer regularly wandering through the campground at dawn and dusk. Fireflies appear in late spring and early summer. The trails are short and well-marked, most under a mile, so this is a better fit for casual walkers and families with young children than for campers looking for long-distance routes. Some trail sections wash out when the Brazos floods, so it's worth checking conditions before arrival.
The campground has 38 asphalt pull-through RV sites with full hookups (30-amp electric, water, and sewer), plus tent-only sites, screened shelters with electric and water, and primitive sites. Sites are well-spaced with concrete pads, picnic tables, and fire pits. Trees provide some canopy, though open areas get limited shade. The bathhouse facilities are relatively new and reviewers consistently describe them as clean. Laura M. notes the "free showers are really nice and clean," though she adds "water never got hot for me." Water pressure runs on the low side, around 30-35 psi according to one reviewer.
Cell coverage is limited. AT&T users report one bar; Verizon gets two bars at some sites. Mature trees can also block satellite dish placement depending on the site. Generators are not permitted. The park gates close at 10 p.m. A $5 daily entrance fee applies in addition to camping fees, though Texas State Park Pass holders and qualifying disabled veterans are exempt.
Evan V. calls February "very temperate climate and zero bugs this time of year," and several reviewers echo that winter and early spring visits are less crowded. Weekends fill up quickly with day-trippers from Houston, so reservations are strongly recommended for Friday and Saturday nights. Fire ants are present, so campers should check sites before setting up. The town of Sealy, a few miles west, covers most resupply needs including groceries, fuel, and laundry. For campers wanting a different setup in the area, Kathy's Kampground & Storage is another option a few miles to the south.
