Reservations are available at Jones Gap State Park Campground, but campers should know upfront: there are no RVs, no car camping, and no pets allowed. The 19 trailside sites are all hike-in or walk-in, set along the Middle Saluda River corridor within Jones Gap State Park in Marietta, South Carolina. The access trail has rough stretches, including rocky and muddy sections after rain, so pack accordingly.
Water is the defining feature here. Most sites sit close enough to the Middle Saluda River or its tributaries that the sound of moving water carries through the night. Site 8 gets consistent mentions for its flat footprint and direct riverside position. Site 4, roughly 0.4 miles from the check-in point, sits beside a creek and works well for campers carrying heavier loads. Site 10 is farther up the hill from the main river, and its tent pad has some buried rocks that make leveling a sleeping surface a minor challenge. As Myron C. notes, "there was some cool air at night coming from the river," which matters in summer when temperatures run hot.
The park connects to the Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area trail network, with over 60 miles of routes ranging from moderate to challenging. Rainbow Falls, a 90-foot waterfall, is accessible via the Jones Gap Trail roughly 2.5 miles from the campsites. Fishing is possible along the river. The ranger station near the trailhead has a bathhouse with flush toilets and hot showers, a small camp store, and a picnic area. No trash cans are provided on trail, so campers are expected to pack out their waste.
"Restrooms are clean and well stocked," Sara M. notes, though they require a walk back to the visitor center from most sites. The campground is open year-round, and first-time backpackers have found the relatively short carry-in distance a manageable entry point into overnight trail camping. Campers wanting a different setup can look at Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area Trailside Camping — Caesars Head State Park to the west for another option within the same wilderness area.
