Reservations are strongly recommended at Refugio State Beach Campground, where sites run $45 to $350 per night and the campground stays open year-round. Walk-in access applies across the property, with a maximum RV length of 30 feet. Sites are closely spaced throughout, and campers who arrive without a reservation should expect limited availability, especially on summer weekends when the campground draws heavily from nearby population centers.
The layout puts nearly every site within a short walk of the sand, and the row of palm trees lining the beach gives the waterfront a recognizable look. As Alex M. notes of the open sightlines, "Shrubs would only block the view." Some sites closer to the back of the campground have more room, while oceanfront spots go fast. Wind picks up in the evening, and tent campers should stake down thoroughly. A railroad track runs just east of the campground, and Amtrak and freight trains pass through during the day and occasionally at night, which light sleepers should factor in.
Bathrooms are single-occupancy and described consistently across reviews as clean. Hot showers are available via a token machine near the facilities. A camp store operates on site, though it may only be open on weekends, so arrive stocked. Tar on the beach is a recurring issue, a residual effect of an earlier oil spill in the area. Baby oil or WD-40 helps remove it from skin, and campers should plan to sacrifice any swimwear they bring.
Water logistics require some planning. "The water here, while potable, does not taste very good," writes Alex M., and multiple reviewers recommend bringing a dedicated supply. There is no RV dump station on site. The nearest dump and water fill station is at Upper Section (Sites 92-132) & Portola Group - El Capitan State Beach to the east, with Carpinteria as a southern alternative. Groups should also check availability at the Group Camping Area - Refugio State Beach, a separate facility nearby. Book well in advance for any summer or holiday weekend stay.

Refugio State Beach offers excellent coastal fishing as well as trails and picnic sites. Palm trees planted near Refugio Creek give a distinctive look to the beach and camping area. Lifeguards patrol the beach year around while lifeguard towers are only staffed roughly from Memorial day weekend through Labor day weekend. Beach wheelchairs are available for use by the public at no cost. With this specially designed chair, wheelchair users may access the beach at several locations. Contact a ranger or lifeguard for additional information.
Visitors can get a unique perspective of the coast line by taking the kayak tours offered by State Park Lifeguards. There are tours available for intermediate and beginning kayakers, and are held roughly from Memorial Day weekend through August.
