Outerknown, is a brand that prides itself on sustainable production practices. Created by pro-surfer Kelly Slater, Outerknown has never compromised its vision to create clothing that is both fashionable and good to the earth.
Outerknown’s Blanket Shirt is an incredible representation of that sustainability.
I am a proud owner of the Blanket Shirt, and I must say, I question if I’ll have to buy a flannel shirt ever again. The heavyweight organic cotton makes it comfortable to the touch, but also its also super sturdy and keeps me warm. Plus, it doesn’t wrinkle. I’ve worn it both indoors, working from home in the new normal, as well as on the trail and at the beach pre-pandemic and it kept me warm and cozy.
The shirt is versatile, wrinkle resistant and great to wear around the house or on walks. The buttons are made from the tagua palm. The buttons are created when fallen seeds from the tagua tree are gathered by locals, then dried and carved. This process helps safeguard South American rainforests from deforestation. The cotton in the blanket shirt is 100% organic, so there are no harmful pesticides involved, and organic cotton requires 90% less water to grow.
So what does sustainability mean for Outerknown? It’s about sourcing recycled and fair trade materials, phasing out harmful materials that shed microfibers, creating smart, recyclable and timeless design, and encouraging their partners to transition to renewable energy for 2030.
