Description

Overview

The Eastwood Campground is a family-friendly campground with access to a beautiful northern Wisconsin recreation area, complete with hiking trails and a scenic lake.

Recreation

A boat ramp into the 411-acre Mondeaux Flowage is available not far from the campground. The lake, although rather shallow, is popular for swimming and fishing. Anglers can expect a catch of musky, pan fish, largemouth bass and pike, among other varieties. A series of hiking trails is available in the area, including for the 1,200-mile Ice Age National Scenic Trail, which traces the edges of a historic glacier that once covered the state of Wisconsin and much of North America.

Facilities

The campground offers a dozen sites for tent or RV camping. No hookups are available. Sites not listed are available on a first come, first served basis. Each site is equipped with tables and campfire rings with grills. Accessible vault toilets are provided. Drinking water is available at Glacial Springs, located on Park Road (FR 1563). A picnic area is available at the nearby Mondeaux Picnic Area.

Natural Features

The campground sits within the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, near the city of Medford. Shady sites are nestled along the Mondeaux Flowage, with the Ice Age National Scenic Trail traversing the campground.

Nearby Attractions

The campground is just a couple miles from the popular Mondeaux Picnic Area at the Mondeaux Dam Recreation Area.

Dark nights and quiet

Sites are well spread out, you barely notice they are other sites nearby. Dark and quiet at night. We didn’t get a chance to check out the Dam Lodge but were able to walk the Ice Age Trail which was just a path along the waters edge and was swampy in most areas. There are a couple of Pit toilets and a hand pump for water The pit toilets were tolerable to use( didn’t gag you)

Beautiful, Remote

We stayed 3 nights at site number 9 in the midst of the pandemic. Overall fairly quiet and private. One side of site 9 is a parking area. Our site had a wooded trail down to the flowage and onto the Mondeaux Esker Trail segment of the Ice Age Trail (“East” segment - most people use the dam as their definition). I had a hard time confirming before hand but yes the trail runs right through this campground. The Mondeaux Esker segment was challenging (muddy) but fun.

Our site was large though not real flat. We fit a car, suv and 17 ft boat.

One drawback was the water at the campground is shut off due to bad water tests (not due to covid). Plan ahead - there is a glacial spring within driving distance and other federal campgrounds that you might be able to get water from. Pit toilets were very clean and didn’t stink. No showers. stayed late August 2020

So peaceful

On a Saturday in August, we found a completely quiet campground. Nice, well-spaced wooded sites on a rolling hill with glimpses of the lake through the trees. Clean pit toilets and campsite facilities (fire pit and picnic table). Only stayed a night, but happy to have found this tranquil gem off the beaten path!
