At the base of a basalt coulee along the Columbia River, Rocky Coulee Recreation Area gives campers a close-up look at the high desert landscape that defines this stretch of central Washington. Sites are walk-in, roughly 100 yards from the parking area, with tent pads set on crushed pea gravel that keeps them level and well-defined. No shade exists here. Summer afternoons get hot, and wind is a reliable presence, as it is throughout the Vantage area.
The Columbia sits within reach for paddlers and anglers, though water access varies by site. Reviewers note that launching a SUP board may require carrying gear some distance to find a suitable put-in. Wildlife sightings, including bighorn sheep and frogs, have been reported at dusk. The cliffs above the coulee draw attention, and the nearby Ginkgo Petrified Forest adds geological context to the surrounding terrain. Vantage Riverstone Resort Campground provides a more developed alternative nearby for campers who want hookups or additional amenities.
At $10 per night, the campground includes drinking water, fire pits, picnic tables, flush toilets, and cell service. Burn bans are possible in summer, so a propane setup is worth bringing. Chad L. notes the camp was "clean with tidy restrooms," though late-night arrivals and occasional I-90 noise have been flagged as drawbacks. Rocky Coulee works best for campers comfortable with an exposed, no-frills setup who want direct river access and a low-cost base for exploring places to camp near Vantage and the surrounding Columbia Basin.
