Kosmos Recreation Area (Tacoma Public Utilities)

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Managed by the City of Tacoma as part of its public utilities holdings, Kosmos Recreation Area sits along Riffe Lake in Glenoma, Washington, giving campers drive-in, walk-in, and boat-in access to a large reservoir backed by forested hills. Sites vary considerably in character. Some sit close to the road, where noise is noticeable, while others are set a few hundred yards back. Arriving early matters here, as lakeside spots fill by mid-morning on summer weekends, and a June weeknight visit found the area running medium to full.

The access road is rough enough to require slow driving, though at least one Class A motorhome with a trailer has made it through without issue. There is no maximum RV length listed, but the internal loop can be blocked, so larger rigs should confirm conditions before committing. Porta-potties are on-site. A dump station and non-potable water are available at a park a few miles up the road. Cell service is available, and campfires and pets are both permitted.

The lake is the main draw, with fishing, kayaking, and swimming all drawing visitors. An RC flying area occupies the north end of the property. Campers have spotted bald eagles overhead. The atmosphere can lean toward a local gathering spot at times, with some non-recreational occupants present, though reviewers consistently note they keep to themselves. "Great place to spend some time next to a lake," notes Derrell M. after multiple visits.

TPU (Tacoma Power) Riffe Lake (Dog Mountain Landing Zone) sits just to the west for campers who want a different configuration along the same reservoir.

Worth every penny

Perfectly fine, especially considering the low low price of $0. Sites no closer together (honestly, more spacious than) the average KoA I’ve paid $60-$90 to pop up a tent in.

I chose a spot closer to the road than the lake, but if I’d arrived before 7:45 other spots would have been available, I’d imagine.

Well worth the money

This is a really pretty site. The camping and beach access is great. We saw bald eagles and very low flying cargo planes. There is some kind of RC flying area on the north side of the site.

There is road noise, but that is going to depend on where you camp. There are sites right next to the road and sites a few hundred yards away. There are"homeless" camps here. They didn't bother us, but you can tell that not everyone here is a recreational camper.

It is large enough that we got our class A with trailer in and out. There is a bit of a loop, but this can be blocked so check first. The road is very rough, you have to go slow.

There is a dump and non-potable water station at the park a few miles up the road. It is$5 for non-campers today.

pretty great

The lake is lovely! Portos and fire rings. Medium-full on a June weeknight. Minor road noise. A little trash, a little local-party-spot vibe at times, but not bad. Would stay again as a solo female.
