Fishing and creek access draw campers to Rock Island Campground, the final developed campground along Icicle Creek Road in Wenatchee National Forest. The 21-site campground straddles the creek, with 17 sites on one side and 4 on the other, connected by a bridge that doubles as a stargazing platform after dark. Several spacious sites sit directly alongside the water, though these prime spots attract steady foot traffic from hikers using the loop trail that runs through the campground.
The creek provides a swimming area, though the water stays cold even in summer months. Concrete remnants along some creek edges create snags for fishing but don't prevent access entirely. Kimberly U. notes the location is "right on the creek and at night it is perfect to fall asleep to." Vault toilets and drinking water are available on both sides of the creek, with several trails of varying difficulty starting nearby.
The gravel access road continues well beyond where many expect it to end, requiring persistence to reach this upper valley location. RVs are limited to 22 feet maximum. Sites fill quickly during peak season, and the remote location means no cell service. Campers seeking additional options can explore campgrounds around Leavenworth, though Rock Island's end-of-road position offers more solitude than lower elevation alternatives.
Description
This campground is located 17 miles up the Icicle Creek Road.
