Fighter jets from Naval Air Station Whidbey Island roar overhead during daytime hours at this sprawling state park campground split between Whidbey and Fidalgo Islands. The noise stops by evening, but Isabelle K. recommends bringing "ear plugs just in case" for the daytime flights that can be "literally ear splitting."
Multiple camping loops spread across 300-plus sites accommodate everything from RVs with full hookups to walk-in tent spots. The Bowman Bay upper loop draws campers seeking more separation, while the lower Cranberry Lake area puts sites closer to water access. Travis D. found the hike-in sites "totally tucked away in the trees with soft ground and simple surroundings," though these first-come spots fill early during peak season. Standard drive-in sites include fire rings, picnic tables, and parking pads, but privacy varies significantly between locations.
Cranberry Lake offers designated swimming areas with shallow water suitable for children, while short trails connect campsites to saltwater beaches on Puget Sound. The park's trail system includes routes to Goose Rock summit and lighthouse viewpoints. Campers can walk to beach access points or drive to parking areas when hauling gear. Evening programs at the amphitheater provide family entertainment during summer months.
Clean restroom facilities feature flush toilets and coin-operated hot showers requiring tokens purchased at $1 for four tokens. Cell coverage remains spotty with AT&T showing intermittent service. Roads through the campground run narrow and steep in sections. Summer reservations fill quickly, while off-season camping operates from Quarry Pond loop only with limited hookup availability. Sites with water and electric hookups cost $30 per night, while primitive spots run $20. For additional camping options in the region, explore campgrounds near Anacortes.
