Kerr Lake State Recreation Area encompasses several campgrounds along North Carolina's largest lake, with Kimball Point serving as one of its most water-focused destinations. This small campground sits on a peninsula jutting into the lake, where most sites provide direct water access and clear views across the expansive reservoir.
The campground's layout centers around lake proximity rather than privacy. Sites cluster close together along the shoreline, with many offering immediate water access for swimming, fishing, or launching small watercraft. "Several sites are waterfront," notes Jess, who camped on site 75 right at the water's edge. The lake's clarity allows visibility down five to six feet, and sandy beach areas dot the shoreline between campsites. A boat launch provides access for larger vessels, while picnic tables and fire rings equip each site.
Campers can fish directly from their sites or explore the walking paths that wind around the point. The small playground serves families, though no extended hiking trails exist within the campground boundaries. Swimming happens directly from the shoreline, and the clear water draws many visitors during the warmer months.
Reservations require booking exactly six months in advance at 8 a.m. for popular dates, particularly summer weekends. The campground operates from early April through late October, with spring and fall offering cooler temperatures and fewer crowds. Road access involves some narrow sections that may challenge larger RVs in certain areas. Electric, water, and sewer hookups serve RV campers, though some sites require longer hoses due to hookup positioning. A general store five minutes away provides firewood and basic supplies, while the nearest gas station sits eleven minutes in the opposite direction.
The combination of immediate water access and full hookups makes Kimball Point well-suited for RV campers who prioritize lake activities over campground privacy.
