    SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Frontier Town Campground in North Hudson, New York offers specialized facilities for equestrians, located approximately 55 miles from Orwell, Vermont. The equestrian camping loop features designated sites with ample space for horse trailers and direct access to surrounding trails. Separate camping loops accommodate tent and RV campers with electric hookups, water connections, and sewer facilities. The bathrooms remain immaculate with staff maintaining the grounds regularly. The campground provides fifty-amp and thirty-amp electrical service, picnic tables, and sanitary dump stations. Fire rings are available at each site, with firewood sold on premises. The spacious sites can accommodate large rigs, though some campers note challenges with positioning trailers correctly within certain sites.

Direct access to Adirondack trails makes this location ideal for riders seeking extended excursions. The campground serves as an excellent base for exploring the region, with proximity to Lake George and Ticonderoga. Sites on the western side of the property receive optimal morning sun for riders preparing for early trail departures. Reservations are recommended, especially during summer months when mosquitoes can be prevalent in the old-growth forest setting. Pets are permitted throughout the campground, allowing horse owners to bring other animals along. The shower facilities remain consistently clean with hot water readily available. While no dedicated horse corrals appear in the facility listing, the equestrian loop's design accommodates horses with appropriate spacing between sites and shared utility pedestals.

      So clean!

We stayed in site 33 which is in the equestrian camping area. It’s really open with little tree cover which is perfect for those who work remote using Starlink. We had fantastic connection. The sites in the equestrian camping area are huge and so clean. The bathrooms are the cleanest I’ve seen so far and we do this full time. The only disappointment was that the hot water doesn’t get very hot in the shower so you better do some jumping jacks to get pumped before showering during colder temps! The trails are well marked and well maintained. Overall, this is a fantastic campsite. There’s even a brewery a ten minute walk down the road. We didn’t go but looks nice. Get your supplies before you arrive! Not many places around to quickly grab charcoal if you need it.

      Clean and New

Sites are built wrong so it is hard to get you camper into your site correct. It is definitely catered to the equestrian part of the camping. I won’t be going back there anytime soon.

      Gifford Woods State Park Campground

Gifford Woods State Park - October 2023

Plenty of space between sites. Decent bathroom situation--I've seen better and I've seen worse in Vermont. The (AT&T) cell phone reception was pretty good, but could be slow at times (which could be because of the area or because of the busy fall color season.)

      Gifford Woods State Park Campground

      Cleanest, friendliest VT state park!

I've stayed at 10 of the state parks of VT. Gifford Woods takes the cake in friendliness of its staff. The park is amazingly clean, well run, located just of RT 4 and very near to Killington, Vermont. It has multiple lean-to sites which are in wooded areas. Cool stone bathrooms and playing fields for kids but the highlight (for me) is access to the Appalachian Trail. The AT runs directly through this park. While on a 4 state section hike I traveled by foot through this park. The ranger gave me an ice cream, pointed me to the showers and then chatted with me for an hour about my hike so far. He also gave me a ride to the Inn at Long Trail to pick up a resupply box since I was a few days behind schedule and low on food. I'll always remember his kindness. Living just across the state line in NH, I have frequented Gifford Woods on 4 other occasions for day hiking with family. Enjoy! I sure did!

      Frontier Town Campground

New, very nice, with killer bugs

I was in site 43, it was long enough it could have fit two of the biggest RVs I have ever seen. My 75 foot starling cable did not even reach all the way back out to the road. I drove through the equestrian loop and found it very confusing. Lots of fences and shared pedestals. I stayed in the next loop, stagecoach. Everything looked spic and span like it had just opened last month. The young man at the check in station said there were very few people there except on the weekends. I only saw three or four other rVs and two of them had to camp right next to me. I saw the bugs, some of them clearly mosquitoes and I never saw one get away with biting me. But I ended up with two lower legs and two forearms that constantly itch like mad. I will never go back in June.

      Gifford Woods State Park Campground

Pristine site in a gorgeous mountain campground

This campground is the number one rated in Vermont for a reason. The staff were wonderful, the sites are pristine and picturesque, the faculties are decorated with wildflowers. We met a number of AT through hikers, who were very willing to share their adventure stories.

      Moreau Lake State Park Campground

      South of the ADKs

This campground is close to the highway between Albany and the Adirondacks. There’s a nice big lake and the Hudson RIver. Many campsites are near the lake. The sites are shady and close together, but still feel fairly private. We enjoyed the hiking trails and beach while camping, then went further north for the full ADK experience.

Highway Adjacent But Good Hiking Access

When camping in VT it is usually our goal to hike, rest, cook, and relax at camp. We live in a busy/loud city so we really love a rural spot where we can just unplug and enjoy nature. Gifford Woods has great access to the AT and the Long Trail, nice bathrooms, and kind staff... but campers beware- it is wedged between two major highways. Initially we pulled up to the site "Poplar" after driving 4+ hours and I could have cried, this site faces a large DOT/Parks Dept. parking lot with a huge building and trucks everywhere. Luckily the (very sweet) staff said they understood that this was an issue and that they do get lots of complaints about that site. They moved us to T02 which was dramatically better. Unfortunately, you can still hear trucks/car honking/ambulances from that site and I assume all other sites. I understand now that people camp here just for AT access, but I would probably not go back due to the sheer volume of the neighboring highways and quieter camping options nearby.

    Guide to Orwell

Luzerne Campground provides dedicated horse stalls for equestrians camping in the Adirondacks, approximately 90 miles from Orwell, Vermont. This New York DEC facility stands out as the only campground in the state specifically designed to accommodate horseback riders with sites that include stalls for horses. The heavily wooded campground features full hookup sites with 30-amp and 50-amp electrical service, water, and sewer connections suitable for both tent campers and RVs. Camping areas are nestled among pine trees and mossy boulders, creating a secluded forest environment despite the campground's proximity to the main road. The bathrooms remain consistently clean with reliable hot water in the showers. Horses are comfortably accommodated in dedicated stalls adjacent to campsites.

Direct access to multiple riding trails begins at the campground, with opportunities for daily trail exploration throughout the surrounding Adirondack forest. Riders appreciate the varied terrain and well-maintained paths that connect to larger trail systems. The campground operates seasonally from May 19 to September 10, providing summer access to the area's extensive trail network. Additional outdoor activities for campers and their horses include swimming at the campground's beach, fishing, kayaking, and hiking. A small country store located across from the entrance offers convenient supplies for both campers and their equine companions. Trailer parking accommodates various sizes, though larger rigs should navigate carefully due to some low-hanging branches along the access roads. The campground's unique combination of horse facilities and recreational amenities makes it a popular destination for equestrians seeking Adirondack trail experiences.
