Description

State Park

Frontier Town Campground, Equestrian and Day Use Area is located on 91 acres on the shores of the Schroon River. This public campground is a key component of a Master Plan to establish a Gateway to the Adirondacks at Exit 29 of the Northway, in the town of North Hudson, announced by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo in January 2017. Located in the heart of the Adirondacks, the Gateway site once hosted the Frontier Town theme park. For more than 40 years, Frontier Town, a Wild West theme park, was a destination for families from across the country. Visitors traveled back into living history visiting the hearths and homes of a pioneer village, enjoying a rodeo and finding themselves in the midst of a hold-up by outlaws on horseback. New York State and the Open Space Institute, working in collaboration with five neighboring Adirondack towns, created a blueprint for a new recreation hub that would improve local amenities, expand access, and draw increased visitors to this part of the Park. DEC will operate the facility according to the terms of a conservation easement.

Best rustic camping in Adarondacks

Stayed twice - first time at site 59 with a 28' travel trailer and second time at 56 with a tent. This is a great home base to explore from the Lake George region to Ticonderoga to day hikes or cycling. Both times the bathrooms and showers were immaculate. The staff does a fantastic job of maintenance. This is an old-growth forest area to a site on the west side of the road gives best Morning sun - sites 57 and 59 are good examples.

New, very nice, with killer bugs

I was in site 43, it was long enough it could have fit two of the biggest RVs I have ever seen. My 75 foot starling cable did not even reach all the way back out to the road. I drove through the equestrian loop and found it very confusing. Lots of fences and shared pedestals. I stayed in the next loop, stagecoach. Everything looked spic and span like it had just opened last month. The young man at the check in station said there were very few people there except on the weekends. I only saw three or four other rVs and two of them had to camp right next to me. I saw the bugs, some of them clearly mosquitoes and I never saw one get away with biting me. But I ended up with two lower legs and two forearms that constantly itch like mad. I will never go back in June.

Clean and New

Sites are built wrong so it is hard to get you camper into your site correct. It is definitely catered to the equestrian part of the camping. I won’t be going back there anytime soon.
