Trail runners, mountain bikers, and boulderers all converge on Green Canyon, a free dispersed camping area tucked into Cache National Forest just outside North Logan. The canyon road runs alongside a multi-use trail that sees heavy recreational traffic, and the camping spots, most with established stone fire rings and picnic tables, line both sides of the gravel road as it winds deeper into the canyon. Vault toilets are located near the trailhead and again further up the road.
The atmosphere here skews social. Weekends, especially in summer, draw large crowds, and reviewers note that all sites can fill by early evening on a Friday. Steven E. describes it as "notorious for high school gatherings," and litter, including broken glass and nails from burned pallet wood, is a recurring concern. Wear closed-toe shoes and come with that expectation. Weekday and shoulder-season visits tell a different story: one camper who arrived on a Wednesday in early October found only a handful of other campers and open sites well into the evening.
The canyon walls themselves give the sites some visual character. Several spots sit near bouldering routes, and at least one site features a small cave visible from the road. Trees provide shade along much of the corridor, which reviewers note is a meaningful advantage during summer heat. The gravel road is passable in a standard sedan, though it has dips and ruts that require slow driving.
One practical note: the road closes December 1 through April 15, and at least one recent review mentions a $10 permit fee for a 3-day stay, so confirm current fee status before heading out. Police do occasionally check in on campers overnight, so be prepared to explain your stay. Nearby alternatives worth knowing include Spring Hollow Campground and Bridger Campground if Green Canyon is full.
Campers who time their visit for a weeknight or the quieter fall season will find a free, accessible base with rock features overhead and trail access right from camp.
