NO WAY!

Per the GPS coordinates, I found the turn off for this location off Byway 12. I wish I would have snapped a pic but didn’t think about it till I was long gone. The entry was no-way a road. Maybe it once was, but not anymore. Not only was it a lumpy, bumpy mess, but Weeds have grown up both sides and the middle. I backed out and left. Wasn’t comfortable driving my Jeep there, and no way would I venture it in my rig. I did have 2 bars of Verizon service at the entry point. Not sure if that would stay the same had I gone to an actual campsite.

Dispersed camping in Grand Staircase

Great location right off Cottonwood road in the Grand Staircase. About 14 miles if coming in from the North. If you go much further south towards Page, run into having less tree coverage, which in this area helps with the wind. Nice and flat area here, would certainly stop again.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Cottonwood Canyon Road accessible for camping vehicles?

Cottonwood Canyon Road is partially accessible for camping vehicles but can present challenges. The northern section (about 14 miles in from Byway 12) is more manageable for most vehicles. However, road conditions deteriorate further south, with some sections becoming bumpy, uneven, and potentially impassable after rain. Larger RVs and trailers may struggle with narrower sections and washouts. High-clearance vehicles are recommended, and four-wheel drive is beneficial during wet conditions. Always check current road conditions before attempting to access this area, especially after rainfall.

What are the camping options along Cottonwood Canyon Road?

Camping options along Cottonwood Canyon Road include dispersed BLM sites with primitive amenities. The best spots are found about 14 miles in from the northern entrance near Byway 12, offering flat ground suitable for tents and smaller vehicles. These sites provide more tree coverage than southern locations, which helps with wind protection. There are no developed facilities, so campers must bring all necessary supplies including water and pack out all trash. These are true backcountry camping experiences with no fees, but also no services.

When is the best time to visit campgrounds on Cottonwood Canyon Road?

Spring and fall are the optimal seasons to visit campgrounds on Cottonwood Canyon Road, offering moderate temperatures and more stable road conditions. Summer brings intense heat with little shade in many areas, though the northern section with tree coverage provides some relief. Winter visits are challenging due to potential road closures and cold temperatures. Avoid visiting during or immediately after rain events, as the road can become impassable with mud and washouts. For the most comfortable experience, aim for April-May or September-October when the weather is pleasant and the landscape is at its most vibrant.
