Cottonwood / Grand Staircase BLM

Cottonwood Canyon Road is partially accessible for camping vehicles but can present challenges. The northern section (about 14 miles in from Byway 12) is more manageable for most vehicles. However, road conditions deteriorate further south, with some sections becoming bumpy, uneven, and potentially impassable after rain. Larger RVs and trailers may struggle with narrower sections and washouts. High-clearance vehicles are recommended, and four-wheel drive is beneficial during wet conditions. Camping options along Cottonwood Canyon Road include dispersed BLM sites with primitive amenities. The best spots are found about 14 miles in from the northern entrance near Byway 12, offering flat ground suitable for tents and smaller vehicles. These sites provide more tree coverage than southern locations, which helps with wind protection. There are no developed facilities, so campers must bring all necessary supplies including water and pack out all trash. These are true backcountry camping experiences with no fees, but also no services.

Spring and fall are the optimal seasons to visit campgrounds on Cottonwood Canyon Road, offering moderate temperatures and more stable road conditions. Summer brings intense heat with little shade in many areas, though the northern section with tree coverage provides some relief. Winter visits are challenging due to potential road closures and cold temperatures. Avoid visiting during or immediately after rain events, as the road can become impassable with mud and washouts. For the most comfortable experience, aim for April-May or September-October when the weather is pleasant and the landscape is at its most vibrant.
