Sitting on a bluff just before the descent into Long Canyon along Burr Trail Road, this free dispersed area on BLM land draws campers who are comfortable without hookups, cell service, or designated sites. The drive from Boulder runs roughly 30 to 50 minutes depending on where along the corridor you settle in. Sites are scattered across the terrain, some with fire rings built by previous visitors, and the area faces open sightlines toward Steep Creek Canyon.
Crowd levels tend to stay manageable even on holiday weekends, with sites spread far enough apart to provide separation. A 16-foot travel trailer fits comfortably, and at least one reviewer confirmed a 40-plus-foot fifth wheel made it through after consulting the info center in Cannonville about route conditions. Cell signal is unreliable here. Come prepared for that, and bring all supplies from town. Steep Creek Bench sits nearby for comparison, and BLM Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument Deer Creek Campground offers a developed alternative a short distance west.
As Lillian W. put it, this is "definitely back country camping, and not for the faint of heart." The isolation is real after dark. Nearby trails include Singing Canyon and Lower Gulch, and ATV routes branch off from the area as well. Pack out everything, confirm your fire is fully extinguished before leaving, and check road conditions before heading out, particularly if rain is in the forecast.
