Anglers and water enthusiasts will find Chief Timothy Park positioned on a 282-acre island in Lower Granite Lake along the Snake River. The Bureau of Land Management operates this campground from late April through October, offering both full hookup sites and primitive camping areas spread across multiple loops.
The island setting creates a unique camping environment where water access defines the experience. "Easy access to the river with little docks along the shore," notes Julie J., and campers can launch boats, swim in designated areas, or fish directly from their sites in some locations. A trail circles the entire island for walking and hiking. The campground includes showers, laundry facilities, and a small store, though reviewers mention the grounds can get dusty during dry periods and muddy when it rains.
Site density varies significantly across the park's different loops. The second loop offers primitive sites without hookups but provides more space between campsites. Pull-through sites accommodate large RVs, while tent sites cluster closer together. "Spots away from the river are better shaded," observes one camper, noting the trade-off between water proximity and tree cover.
Summer holidays bring heavy crowds, and the open layout means limited privacy between neighbors. The park sits about seven miles from camping areas around Clarkston, making it accessible for supply runs while maintaining its island isolation. Bugs can be problematic during peak season, particularly in areas closer to the water.
For a different experience, Hells Canyon Resort offers more secluded camping options along the Snake River corridor.
