The trip we planned months was to relax at the KOA in South Padre Island, Texas. My wife and kids were looking forward to stating at the KOA with our new camper.
Upon arrival, things seemed normal for the COVID-19 check-in. Things went well until after renting a golf-cart. My children and I were going back to the camper when a KOA employee yelled at me to "Slow Down" and "Yes, I work here." The woman followed to my campsite yelling and threatening to kick my family "to the curb". When asking for management I was told "I am the manager". When I notified that I will contact corporate I was told "they will just kick it back". Indeed they did. To note this "manager" was the only person who felt they needed to treat me and my family this way.
With this said, I contacted our attorney who began working on escalating the issue. Our vacation went down from there. My wife and I were unhappy with the campground due to the mistreatment by management.
The campground itself is large but spots are very close to one another. The restrooms are clean, there is a decent-sized laundry, and there is an on-site store for your basic tv supplies. The pool was large at a maximum depth of (4) feet and had a hot tub onsite. The pool at the time of my visit was overtaken by mosquitos.
There is a restaurant in walking distance which is very good. They service breakfast also and can have a long wait at times. Even if you do not stay at the KOA stop by here.
The city/county campgrounds at Isla Blanca Park are just a mile further down and have better access to the beach. The prices are cheaper also. The KOA I felt was overrated and overpriced in this case.
In retrospect of the stay, I will not stay at this KOA nor can I honestly suggest anyone else to. Some may have a better experience but with the way management treated me I feel they deserved the one-star review.
LegendKOA do a nice job catering to the RV and family camper community. This location is no exception and is loaded with amenities and a great location as a full service RV resort. This place is nearly full most of the year. So, reservations are a must here. The campground is located on the Laguna Madre side of the island near the bridge leading to South Padre Island. They have a variety of camping option for RVs, campers, tents, and cabins. The site has a great boat dock for those wanting to try their luck at fishing. The ocean is about 1/2 mile walk across a couple of busy roads. The sites have sewer, water, and power for even the largest RVs. They even have spaces to walk your dog and a pet playground. Like many RV resorts, you do not have any privacy and most of the sites are in the direct sun. Tenters and campers without AC will need to time their visit around the hot spring and summer temperatures. The night time temps average around 85 degrees and over 90 in the daytime in the summer. The Pier 19 restaurant is next door. Otherwise, you will need to bike or drive to restaurants.

We really enjoy the large heated pool. Our dog enjoys his walks to the dog park.
It's a short drive to the beach and SpaceX is close, we just watched the latest test flight.
A big plus is a space between lots here, your neighbors are not 5 ft away like the island parks, here it is more like 50 feet.
Our lot has room for our truck and a picnic table.
We learned how to play Pickle Ball- what a hoot and good cardio also.
Plenty going on to stay busy-we took a dolphin watching trip and saw plenty of them.
Next up is fishing from the pier,
TravelerCheck-in was a breeze. The lady in the front office was very nice, and told us everything we needed to know about the resort.
The one thing I absolutely love about Tropical Trails(if I had to pick one) is that the spaces between sites are some of the largest I've seen. It's so refreshing not to be right on top of your neighbor, even if they are super nice(which ours were).
Some of the other benefits that I thought were noteworthy:
High Speed Internet(ethernet from the pedestal) was very fast(over 100mbit). No issues with multiple 4k stream, and/or Zoom/Teams calls. It's been an absolute joy to carry out my daily work without any network disruption.
Cleanliness of the park is incredible, staff is more than welcoming and ready to address any needs.
Gated access with PIN code entry is a plus, even though the area seems very nice, and somewhat remote.
They provide you with a newer(and clean) picnic table and a nice covered fireplace(and wood!).
If I had to find something negative to say it'd be that I wish there was more grass and less dirt between the sites.
That said, it's a pretty new park, and I am sure they're working on that. Also, this is TX, not MN. I bet it's harder to get grass to grow due to lack of precip.
They have planted a lot of palm(and other) trees, but they're still growing so there isn't much shade at the moment.
There are train tracks on the north end of the resort, and we were very close(as close as you can be) to them. Train seems to roll through at about 1030pm every night, but you honestly don't even notice after the first night.
We kept extending our stay by a few days here, a few days there as we didn't want to leave, but alas, people are finding this place, and we weren't able to keep our spot any longer.
We're heading to FL very soon, but we'll definitely be back to Brownsville and we won't even consider another RV resort.

All considering this park needs a lot and is neglected and over rated. Stayed her for a week based on reviews and is not what we expected. First the park is in the middle of no where and I mean no where. Nothing within biking distance or walking distance, the winds are non stop windy. The grass is still, well there isn’t any nor do they water to grow any, was all weeds which they don’t keep trimmed or cut. Dust and dirt in the trailer everyday. The water is incredibly hard and stains everything. The pool(only 1 pool for the size of this park) get full quick. If you don’t have your seat or chair by 9am bring your own. Oh yah, though they do offer good rates on gold carts, you will need it because it’s a long drive to the pool. There is also a daily resort fee per person for whatever reason they tack onto your bill. The park is way over rated and way over priced considering all the conditions I listed. And the funny part of this, if you go to there website they claim it’s a 9.5 star according to good sams reviews, yet when you go to good sams reviews to look up there park it isn’t listed. Definitely don’t recommend this park nor will we ever return.

If you are near the border and are looking for a great place for your furry companion, Lakewood RV Resort is a great stop. It's near South Padre Island, and the border. If you're looking for a location where you can stay and experience nice amenities though, this is great for that as well.
Don't expect rustic or run down locations here. Full RV hookups, pools, billiards, and outdoor activities for all ages, but especially seniors. I can't recommend this place enough!

We stayed here a month in April 2019. We originally were going to stay two weeks, but we extended due to the great birding in the area. It was off-season and the park was very quiet. Many times, it felt like we had to place to ourselves. We are not 55+, but according to the office staff they are an 80/20 park so up to 20% of occupants can be less than 55. They do, however, restrict people with kids. Doesn’t hurt to call and ask if you are interested in staying. The park has many amenities, including, mail room, pool, spa, showers, laundry, pickle ball courts, horseshoe courts, and shuffleboard courts. Many of the occupants are full-time residents or winter-only with permanent structures, but they had numerous sites available for short-time stays. Our site was nice and level and we had full hook-up. The staff was very nice and accommodated our last-minute stay and our change to a monthly visit. This was a great spot for us because we were close to many good birding spots. Estero Llano, South Padre Island, Santa Ana, Hugh Ramsey Park, and Laguna Atascosa NWR are within an hour drive. The park is also close to grocery and other stores. Nearby is everything you need. As I said, the park was quiet, but there is a train nearby that would come through in the early morning sometimes which was annoying. The park was well maintained, but there were some potholes that need to be fixed. They were doing some sewer pipe construction when we were there, so hopefully some of those roads will be patched. The price for a month stay plus electricity was reasonable. It was starting to get a bit warm while we were there, but they do have a nice breeze most of the time, so mosquitoes were not an issue. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and will stay here again.

LegendWe spent 8 days here for a vacation. The sites are small, but level and include FHU's and cable. It was very crowded, but still relatively quiet. A lot of winter Texans spend the season here, as the weather is really nice in winter. There are not many places to walk your dog, but they do provide waste pickup bags and there is a small dog park. The campground is right on the bay and there is a wonderful restaurant on a pier that is walking distance. You can also take tours of the bay via boat here. The county beach is pretty close, and you can walk or ride the free city bus to the end of the line (a few minutes ride) and get off and walk to the beach. Very nice beach with modern facilities. You can also take the free city bus (bus stop is at campground entrance) into S Padre island or over the bridge to the mainland.

You're on South Padre Island here and it feels good!

GuideThis campground is a very crowded KOA but we were still impressed. While it was a challenge to get into our site because of the closeness of each rig, the staff guided us in safely. We weren't sure how it would be being so crammed in but soon we discovered that this KOA is filled with seasonal folks who love to have a good time. Every night there were happy hours, parties, and gatherings and the regulars were very welcoming. They also had a full agenda of activities from morning to night put on by the KOA. From morning coffee to bingo to ice cream socials, you can stay busy here. It's also in an easy to reach location, right near the entrance to SPI. Overall a great stay!

This campground is on the South tip of South Padre Island. You are on the Gulf and also on the inter coastal waterway. You are just a short walk to a beach or fishing. We love it here and there is so much nearby to check out. There is not much shade here.
Guide600 sites but you better book early. This park is being renovated so expect construction. Lots of beach to walk, pavilions, showers and a jetty to fish off of. Besides the campground, you can also go to the north end of town, access the beach and camp right in the Gulf.
GuideThe park was nice, close to the beach, and had pretty low traffic compared to the rest of the island. The roads weren’t great and needed to be resurfaced. I picked a premium site that didn’t happen to be very premium. While the location of the site was perfect, all of the sites around me had concrete pads but mine... (I guess they hadn’t upgraded my site pad yet) the online map was showing a finished park with a boardwalk, showers and restrooms right behind my site (hints: the reason I chose this site) but it was all still under construction and not available for access. Other than those minor issues, it was an okay experience and for the size of the park, it was pretty quiet.

Sites are not too close together and an easy walk to the beach. Can’t beat the price for a county park. Check in could have been easier. Spent almost 30 minutes for the process. Overall though, very satisfied and will stay here again.
GuideThis park has it all. Top notch fishing, easy access to beautiful beaches and surfing. The check it was easy, but be warned that the little white building is a 1/4 mile before the entrance on the right. There is a parking area at the office to park while you register. You need to sign in and they call your cell when its time to come in due to covid. The only single complaint is the tiny burrs that are all over the grass area and dunes. They get tracked in an hurt when finding them with bare feet. Our youngest screamed bloody murder the first time walking in flip flops over the grass. Shoes required for most of this park. Lots of winter texans and most were really friendly. You have an excellent view of Spacex' Boca Chica launch facility across the channel. We ended up staying a few extra weeks, and we plan to return as often as we can. The horseback riding on the beach by Island Adventures is expensive but well worth the money. This place is too beautiful to get crammed into the local KOA.
