    Tropical Trails RV Resort

Tropical getaway - just a short drive from South Padre

Great new RV resort close to everything, easy access, and Fiber optic internet.
We really enjoy the large heated pool. Our dog enjoys his walks to the dog park.
It's a short drive to the beach and SpaceX is close, we just watched the latest test flight.
A big plus is a space between lots here, your neighbors are not 5 ft away like the island parks, here it is more like 50 feet.
Our lot has room for our truck and a picnic table.
We learned how to play Pickle Ball- what a hoot and good cardio also.
Plenty going on to stay busy-we took a dolphin watching trip and saw plenty of them.
Next up is fishing from the pier,

    South Padre Island KOA

Crowded But Well Kept and Great Restaraunt

We spent 8 days here for a vacation.  The sites are small, but level and include FHU's and cable.  It was very crowded, but still relatively quiet.  A lot of winter Texans spend the season here, as the weather is really nice in winter.  There are not many places to walk your dog, but they do provide waste pickup bags and there is a small dog park.  The campground is right on the bay and there is a wonderful restaurant on a pier that is walking distance.  You can also take tours of the bay via boat here.  The county beach is pretty close, and you can walk or ride the free city bus to the end of the line (a few minutes ride) and get off and walk to the beach.  Very nice beach with modern facilities. You can also take the free city bus (bus stop is at campground entrance) into S Padre island or over the bridge to the mainland.

    South Padre Island KOA

    WeWillReturnHere

Well-run RV Park. Excellent support team/staff, excellent utility hookups, located literally near/on the sound side, our site has plenty of room for our 43’ ClassA and tow/suv, site trash pickup, community center/bldg with a social calendar of things to do, great pool, satellite friendly, good WiFi, good cellular reception, pet walk with waste bags and trash container, small dog fenced pet park, overall clean and friendly place to park the rig for awhile. You're on South Padre Island here and it feels good!

    South Padre Island KOA

    Nice Place for Big RVs

KOA do a nice job catering to the RV and family camper community. This location is no exception and is loaded with amenities and a great location as a full service RV resort. This place is nearly full most of the year. So, reservations are a must here. The campground is located on the Laguna Madre side of the island near the bridge leading to South Padre Island. They have a variety of camping option for RVs, campers, tents, and cabins. The site has a great boat dock for those wanting to try their luck at fishing. The ocean is about 1/2 mile walk across a couple of busy roads. The sites have sewer, water, and power for even the largest RVs. They even have spaces to walk your dog and a pet playground. Like many RV resorts, you do not have any privacy and most of the sites are in the direct sun. Tenters and campers without AC will need to time their visit around the hot spring and summer temperatures. The night time temps average around 85 degrees and over 90 in the daytime in the summer. The Pier 19 restaurant is next door. Otherwise, you will need to bike or drive to restaurants.

    Boca Chica Beach

    Desolate Texas Beach

Boca Chica Beach is the end of the road for South Texas. The beach is about 15 miles outside of the Port of Brownsville Texas and very close to the Mexican Border. The beach is a wild and desolate place. It’s quite a contrast from the overly commercial and manicured beaches to the north on South Padre Island. The beach has a lot of debris from river run off and storms. The amount of trash and plastic waste can be overwhelming at times. The campsites are primitive and only include metal trash barrels. This is a good day trip for locals or a place for visitors who really want to get away. Of note, the beach is currently closed due to Covid 19. However, locals are exercising and walking their dogs despite the closure. When it’s open, you can drive on the beach but will need a 4x4. They don’t allow atvs or RVs on the beach. You will be able to see the Space X facility on the road near the beach.

    The Fig Tree RV Resort

    Friendly atmosophere

I stayed here for February and March while visiting my aunt, who snow birds at Fig Tree. While it’s marketed as a 55+ community, they do allow a small portion of spots to be booked by younger singles or couples (I don’t think they would allow families with children, however). They have a wide array of events weekly that can be fun to attend, and the residents and staff are kind and enjoyable. The park is clean but could use some upgrades/fixing up (a fence needs to be replaced, 1-2 washer/dryers are usually out of order, the gate was broken during my stay, etc), but they are actively working on improvements. Pets are welcome, it’s about 45 minutes from South Padre, and great for day trips into Mexico.

Don’t count on their WiFi working (it is also not secured), but I did have great service with Verizon and good service with AT&T.

Overall, I would definitely consider coming back next winter.

    Isla Blanca Park

    Surprisingly nice

Our specific site was probably what influenced my five star review. This is a huge rv park where they cram rigs very close together, which is not my usual idea of a good time. But we decided to try it out anyways, and we chose our own site off the map on their website. It’s off-season in January, and still it’s packed. site S24 offered much privacy. We could see the water and were surrounded by cactus and agave instead of other RVs. It’s clean and quiet. Really a nice place. Dog friendly. Right on the beach and board walk. It’s a couple miles away from most of the restaurants and shopping, yet still walkable.

    Cameron County Adolph Thomae Jr

    Busy fishing CG

Very busy and popular CG with the local fishermen. Some sites on the water way. Those are very busy with locals walking through the sites to fish and tons of road traffic to the boat launch. We stayed in the area divided by foliage. Much quieter and a lot less traffic. Had a beautiful view of the Laguna Atascosa sanctuary behind us. 30/50 amp service with full hookups. All sites are back in and gravel but easy to level our 40ft 5th wheel.
If you have dogs be careful. While we were there they were having a problem with the Javelinas. A pack attacked our neighbor's dog and bit the owner as she tried to save her pug. A day later we were chased by them at our site when we were out with our dogs. Carry a club of some sort. I scared them with a loud dog whistle. The rangers were notified and they contacted animal control.

Guide to Olmito

RV camping dominates the Olmito area, with temperatures averaging 68-83°F during winter months. February through April can bring sustained winds of 15-25 mph, affecting outdoor activities at dog friendly campgrounds near Olmito. Most campgrounds maintain level sites with concrete pads for stability during the region's frequent wind events.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Access bay fishing within 20 minutes at multiple locations. A Rod and Reel RV Court camper mentioned, "Water way with canoes. Owners are a joy to work with." Fishing from piers or joining guided trips provides reliable catches year-round.

Wildlife watching: Visit nearby Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge, home to over 400 bird species. At Breeze Lake Campground, one visitor noted, "Located 20min. from the SpaceX launch pad on Boca Chica Beach which you can drive on and allows dogs." Many campgrounds offer guided wildlife tours during winter months.

What campers like

High-speed internet connections: Many parks offer fiber optic service that supports remote work. A camper at Tropical Trails stated, "High Speed Internet (ethernet from the pedestal) was very fast (over 100mbit). No issues with multiple 4k stream, and/or Zoom/Teams calls."

Community activities: Winter visitors appreciate the social atmosphere. At Fun-N-Sun RV Resort, "The park has a lot of activities during the winter season. Most activities end March 31." These include organized games, potlucks, and live music.

What you should know

Wind conditions: February through April brings persistent winds. A reviewer from South Padre Island KOA mentioned, "We spent 8 days here for a vacation. The sites are small, but level and include FHU's and cable." Consider wind-resistant awnings and secure outdoor items.

Site spacing variations: Parks differ significantly in how close RVs park to each other. A camper at Tropical Trails noted, "The one thing I absolutely love about Tropical Trails is that the spaces between sites are some of the largest I've seen. It's so refreshing not to be right on top of your neighbor."

Water quality concerns: Hard water can be an issue at some locations. "The water is incredibly hard and stains everything," reported a camper at Tropical Trail Mobile Home & RV Park. Consider using a water filter for drinking and cooking water.

Tips for camping with families

Pool options for kids: Several parks maintain family-friendly swimming facilities. "The outdoor pool is a nice size and clean. My kiddo loved the playground and the ice cream socials on the weekends," noted a visitor at South Padre Island KOA.

Beach day trips: Plan beach outings based on wind forecasts. According to an Isla Blanca Park camper, "The beach area is one of the best and well maintained. Sites are small in certain areas, but others are generous." Most beaches have restrooms and outdoor showers.

Playground access: Check for on-site play areas before booking. "My kiddo loved the playground and the ice cream socials on the weekends," shared a South Padre KOA visitor. Some parks organize weekly activities specifically for children during peak winter seasons.

Tips from RVers

Site selection strategy: Choose sites carefully based on wind protection and access. A camper at Palmdale RV Resort noted, "Stayed here for about a week in July 2023. Very nice pool, hot tub, showers and bathrooms. Verizon was about 1 bar 4g." Request sites away from train tracks when possible.

Full hookup reliability: Most parks offer consistent 50-amp service. "The sites have sewer, water, and power for even the largest RVs," reported a South Padre KOA visitor. Bring a voltage regulator for protection during peak usage times.

Dog walk areas: Pet friendly camping near Olmito typically includes designated pet areas. At Isla Blanca Park, a camper shared, "This campground is on the South tip of South Padre Island. You are on the Gulf and also on the inter coastal waterway. You are just a short walk to a beach or fishing."
