Stayed at campsite #9

Cool spot right on the river. Disappointed in how some people don’t take care of these spots. In getting settled in I stepped in a pile human feces … people need to respect LNT guidelines better!

Scary

Nothing but weird Christmas lights and Christian retreat stations. Felt like we were in a horror movie. After driving all night and arriving at midnight decided best to get out of here. Settled for a parking lot instead of death

This made me sad.

I live not far from here and we camped at site #3 we picked up so much trash in and around our site that it was sad.

Nice place

Stayed here for two nights in late March. The area recently received a lot of rain so the creek was pretty high and fast flowing. There were several marked campgrounds along the creek and a small site further down the road for $15 a night. I stayed at site 4. Sites were very spaced out and mine was fairly clean when I arrived. My only complaint was there were cars frequently driving by throughout the night on the dirt road. Other than that, really enjoyed this place.

Beautiful, private, peaceful

These campsites are extremely spread out, allowing for private camping. No hookups, but a majority of the 14 sites are on the creek itself. Could not recommend Citico Creek more.

Beautiful & pristine mountain creek with free camp spots!

This campground is great for being right next to great day hikes and easy access to Citico Creek, which was just across the gravel road from our site. However- be aware that many of the sites are free, which draws some of East Tennessee's most, ahem, interesting inhabitants to the area! Being a native, it didn't shake me too much.. But if you don't want to mingle with rednecks, this may not be for you :)

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is dispersed camping allowed at Citico Creek?

Dispersed camping at Citico Creek is available throughout the area, particularly in the Citico Creek Wilderness section. While there are 14 designated sites along the main creek area, dispersed camping options exist beyond these marked spots. When choosing a dispersed site, follow Leave No Trace principles and camp at least 100 feet from water sources. The wilderness area offers more remote camping experiences, but requires proper preparation as these locations lack facilities. Always check with Cherokee National Forest rangers for current regulations before setting up in non-designated areas.

Is there a map of Citico Creek campsites?

Yes, maps of Citico Creek campsites are available through the Cherokee National Forest office and at some trailheads in the area. The campground contains 14 marked sites that are numbered and easily identifiable along the creek. For the most detailed and current mapping information, contact the Cherokee National Forest ranger station directly or visit their official website where PDF maps can often be downloaded. Having a map is recommended as the sites are quite spread out along the creek.

Is Citico Creek Campground in Cherokee National Forest?

Yes, Citico Creek Campground is located within Cherokee National Forest. It sits in the Tellico Ranger District of this expansive forest that covers much of eastern Tennessee. The campground provides access to the Citico Creek Wilderness area, offering opportunities for hiking, fishing, and wildlife observation within the national forest boundaries. This location makes it an excellent base camp for exploring the broader Cherokee National Forest trail system and natural features.

What are the specific features of Citico Creek Campground sites?

Citico Creek Campground features 14 spacious, well-spread sites offering excellent privacy. Many sites sit directly on the creek, providing soothing water sounds and easy access for fishing or wading. The sites are primitive with no hookups, perfect for tent camping or small trailers. Site #3 and #4 are popular options with creek access, though site maintenance can vary. Some sites require a $15 fee per night. The campground's layout allows for a more secluded experience than typical developed campgrounds. Each site has room for parking, tent space, and typically includes a fire ring, though amenities are minimal.
