Loud frogs announce the night along Lake Santeelah, where nine dispersed sites line a gravel road that winds past a small cemetery. Each established site includes a fire ring, picnic table, and level tent pad, making this one of the more developed free camping options in the Nantahala National Forest. Most sites sit directly on the water with lake access for paddlers.
The gravel access road requires careful navigation around potholes and blind curves, but any vehicle can reach the sites. Steve K. notes that "parking was pretty level, but behind my rear wheels it declined toward the lake." Site 9 at the road's end offers the most space and seclusion, with room for multiple tents and its own trail down to the water. Several sites can accommodate small RVs or truck campers, though most parking areas sit across the road from the actual camping spots.
Water activities dominate the experience here, with kayak and canoe launches available at most sites. Firewood is typically available, and cell service reaches the area for both T-Mobile and Verizon users. The 14-day stay limit allows extended visits, though Jake H. warns that "you gotta get there early if you want easy water access" on busy weekends.
Registration occurs at a kiosk near the cemetery, and the area stays open year-round. Unfortunately, litter problems persist despite the natural setting, with several reviewers noting trash left by previous visitors. The sites fill quickly during peak times, with some appearing to host long-term occupants. For a more developed alternative, Cheoah Point Campground provides reserved sites with additional amenities nearby.
