Best Dispersed Camping near Hartwell Lake
Several free dispersed camping areas surround Hartwell Lake in the Chattahoochee National Forest, with sites concentrated near Mountain Rest and Blackwell Bridge. Most locations require moderate clearance vehicles to access via rough forest roads. A recent review noted "moderate clearance vehicles required, or hike it" when describing Mountain Rest Mountain Top, a large backcountry site with room for multiple tents.
The Blackwell Bridge area offers riverside camping with sites on both sides of the bridge along the Chauga River. Falls Creek and King Creek provide similar primitive experiences with established fire rings but no facilities. Blue Valley Dispersed Camping, while slightly farther out, features multiple well-maintained sites. One camper shared that Blue Valley has "8 very well kept campsites, almost all near a creek of some sort" with enough room for both small and larger groups. Most dispersed sites throughout the region prohibit RVs due to narrow, vegetation-lined access roads, but accommodate tent camping with existing fire rings. Pack in all supplies including water or bring filtration equipment, as drinking water is rarely available at these off-grid locations.
