The mountainous terrain surrounding Glendale, South Carolina provides access to numerous dispersed camping opportunities within an hour's drive. National forest lands dominate the camping landscape, with sites like Mountain Rest Mountain Top and Blackwell Bridge offering primitive camping experiences in South Carolina. Across the state line, North Carolina's Pisgah National Forest contains additional options including Blue Valley Dispersed Camping and Blue Ridge Roadside Campsites. Most locations feature basic fire rings without amenities, positioned along forest service roads or near trailheads. Tent camping predominates, though some areas like Wash Creek Dispersed Sites accommodate small to medium-sized RVs on level pull-offs.

Rough forest roads and limited signage create navigation challenges throughout the region. As one camper noted, "Access is rough, moderate clearance vehicles required. Also, as courtesy, cruise the bridge and see if people are down there first." Cell service is virtually nonexistent at most sites, requiring advance planning and offline maps. Weather impacts accessibility significantly, with some areas becoming impassable after heavy rain. Many campgrounds experience seasonal closures or damage from storms, as evidenced by recent hurricane impacts. Elevation changes bring cooler temperatures even in summer months, with campers reporting: "This campsite is fairly high in elevation, so it gets cool at night. Don't make the mistake of taking a summer sleeping bag."

Creekside camping represents a common feature across the region's dispersed sites. Campers frequently mention the soothing sounds of flowing water as a highlight, with one reviewer noting: "Even if people are camping near you, the stream creates a nice sound barrier so you don't really hear them. Very nice to fall asleep to the sound of the stream." Privacy varies considerably by location and timing, with weekends drawing significantly more visitors than weekdays. Day hikers often share access roads and parking areas with overnight campers, particularly at sites near popular trails. Star-gazing opportunities receive consistent praise, with minimal light pollution at most dispersed campsites in the area. Security concerns exist at some sites, with occasional reports of theft when campsites are left unattended.

      Wash Creek Dispersed Pull-Off

Pull off along well used access road

Great spot to pull in last minute. There are multiple spots along this stretch of road. Would not recommend if you want to post up somewhere private, decent amount of traffic pulling through for a mountain road.

      Wash Creek Dispersed Pull-Off

      Beary nice

Great spot! I didn’t stay at the pull off but further down the road there’s actual campgrounds with tent platforms and fire rings for dispersed camping. I found the last empty one. It was quiet but there was a bit of cycling traffic up and down the road. They had signs posted about bear activity and I even saw a bear come out 10 feet from my car! Didn’t bother me after walking back down the road. Nice quiet site :)

      Wash Creek Dispersed Site #1

      Busy place

You can only camp at designated spots. This was full of people and bikers. People did end up sleeping on cars along the road and were left undisturbed. We were there on a Tuesday night and it was packed. It was indeed pretty and there is a creek

      Wash Creek Dispersed Site #1

      Nice

Great place to park for the night. Previous camper left a lot of trash, but we cleaned it up. Parked our van right next to the fire ring. A little surprised by all the car traffic on the forestry road.

      Wash Creek Dispersed Pull-Off

Dispersed camping on the side of the forest road

Lots of pull off spots, I followed the coordinates and it took me to a little pull off. I was driving at night so it was hard to see that there were actually a bunch before this one. Peaceful, no highway sound!

Black Balsam Knob - Dispersed Camping

      No rest, but the BEST

The coordinates tried to send us to Sam Knob, but we followed the signs to Black Balsam instead. They’re the same parking lot so it’s not a big deal. Like others have said, the wind is killer. Took a bit of time to anchor our tent poles so they didn’t fold in because of the wind. It was still very intense and I personally didn’t get any sleep. BUT. If you want to wake up to the most beautiful sunrise, the best view, and feel physically closer to God than you ever have, it’s worth all of it. I will have failed if I don’t come back here before I die. I loved it.

      Wash Creek Dispersed Pull-Off

Great little spot right off the road

Perfect spot near water, lots of spots to pull right off the road. Only down side is the road is somewhat busy (we camped on Halloween). Heard some screams(?) in the middle of the night but other than that and the cars driving by it was pretty quiet. The tent pad was very flat, fire ring had wood in it upon arrival (thank you!) though it was wet, and overall it was peaceful

Upper Cove Creek - UCC2 Dispersed

      Okay spot

Avery Road was closed so we ended up here. Not a whole lot of sites in the forest here. This site was fine, nothing special, but nothing bad. There’s a shallow creek that runs next to this spot.

    What campers like

Secluded camping spots: Mountain Rest Mountain Top offers isolation from crowds with "Shaded and at trailhead of a trail down to creek and near a second trail to a waterfall. Had a few people during the day but evenings were totally quiet."

Water features: Stream sounds create natural white noise at multiple sites. At one Wash Creek location, a reviewer mentioned "There's a stream that runs along the clearing, making some great natural white noise for sleeping. The forest road is very bumpy and narrow, but high clearance is not needed."

A camper searching for Blue Valley Dispersed Camping advised: "From Highlands, follow NC 28 south about 5.5 miles and turn right onto Blue Valley Rd. (S.R. 1618) at the sign. The pavement will end in a half mile. Just stay on the main path for just little over 3 or so miles."

Vehicle requirements: Most forest roads require appropriate clearance. "Moderate clearance vehicle is required to access, (or hike it)," notes a Mountain Rest Mountain Top visitor. Some roads become more challenging after weather events.

Limited amenities: Free camping near Glendale, South Carolina means self-sufficiency. Most sites lack facilities entirely. One Blue Valley camper explained: "Sites were tree-filled and nice. Picnic tables and fire rings were at each site and sites were pretty well spread out. Very much so a dispersed site."

    Tips for camping with families

Site selection: Choose established sites with natural barriers. At Blue Valley Dispersed Camping, families appreciate that "Beautiful, large, private sites. You couldn't see our site from the road, huge site, lots of woods surrounding for kids to play and explore, right beside a gorgeous large creek."

Weather preparation: Temperature swings can be significant. "This campsite is fairly high in elevation, so it gets cool at night," warns a reviewer from Blue Ridge Roadside Campsites.

Security awareness: Some areas report theft issues. A Wash Creek visitor cautioned: "There are signs about being a high crime area and they are not kidding while I was out picking up a few things at ingles someone came by and took my tent and sleeping bag that was inside."

    Tips from RVers

Site accessibility: Small to medium RVs can access some dispersed areas with careful planning. At Blue Valley Dispersed Camping, one visitor noted: "I would be a bit concerned with larger rigs on the small road but small RVs or tents are great."

Turnaround space: Limited turning areas restrict larger vehicles. A camper at Wash Creek noted "Great spot with room to turn around," which is crucial information for RV drivers considering free camping options.

Seasonal considerations: RV access becomes significantly more difficult after rain or snow. Roads may become temporarily impassable, stranding vehicles without 4WD capability.
