Breakneck Campground

Great staff great place.

We stayed in a 3-sided hut due to rain and it was exactly what we needed!

This place is great if your a beginner or advanced. They have different site options. I chose the deck and it was beautiful. You can use the deck as a gathering place or put a smaller tent on. I was solo this trip but fell safe and no present danger. I left grill and cooler our when I left and came back to it still there. The facilities are nice and ppl are great.

Love this small campground. We chose one of two primitive sites next to a small creek. Apart from the campers above us on top of the hill, we were a few hundred feet from the other primitive sites. Despite being just a minutes walk from our truck, we felt incredibly secluded. Being so far away, noise was a nonissue. Although cool, I'm glad we didn't reserve a scenic campsite. Those sites are very close to one another, where I could see noise being an issue for anyone that prefers the sounds of nature over their neighbors drunken stupor. Can't wait to go back!

Got a good spot down by the creek with a great view from the tent.

Absolutely fell in love with this private campground. Small with dispersed sites. Well maintained with both valult toilets and a traditional bathroom. Showers are available. Wood and ice available onsite. Just minutes outside of a quaint little town. Great nearby hiking.

My husband and I camped here on a whim, after our original location got rained out. We picked a nice big lot by the dirt road. Though we had neighbors next to us, you could hardly tell they were there. Most people were incredibly respectful of noise levels, which added to the enjoyment of the experience.

There are two porta potties that I could see situated around camp. The one I used was quite clean and didn't smell too bad in the 85+ degree weather. There is also a regular bathroom with one shower towards the front of camp. The shower had hot water.

You can buy wood by the bucket for $5 and ice up front as well.

There are nice hiking trails around the area and some pretty sites to see.

We had such a good time we plan on camping there again.

We loved our stay! We definitely lucked out with one of the best campsites; we were right next to the creek, it was super spacious and super private. There’s rough terrain so typically these sites are walk in but there wasn’t many people so they allowed us to take our truck which was very convenient. Becky was very kind as well! Loved our stay.

Breakneck is a private campground on the edge of the McConnell’s Mill State Park. They offer RV sites, tent camping and cabins. The tent camping is either grassy, flat sites or on an elevated timber platform overlooking a gorge. They also offer walk-in tent sites down by the creek which are beautiful. 

We were lucky enough to be able to to camp down by the stream. There are designated fireplaces. It is quite a walk up the hill to the campground amenities, but worth it to feel secluded down by the creek. From our campsite we walked along the creek into McConnells Mill State Park and joined the covered bridge trail. Approx. 30min walk along the creek down into McConnells Mill State Park. 

The campground sells firewood and has great amenities. Note: there is no phone reception at the tent sites by the creek. They welcome fury friends!

What a special stat we had! So close to the McConnells Mill trails, gorgeous deck spot above the gorge and low key vibe to the campground overall. I cannot believe it took us this long to stay here!

My daughter and I came through here on our way from Michigan to Virginia. I think it was a Thursday night. It was quiet and beautiful. The host did seem to be expecting a crazy weekend, but we didn’t stay to find out. We camped in a lower loop with platforms overlooking the hill. There was a clean port a potty near our site. We didn’t explore much else but I believe the river would have only been a short walk/drive away. The overall vibe was clean, safe, and beautiful. They collected payment at night by visiting the sites. I did not see sites near water or a playground that are featured in other photos (but perhaps I did not look hard enough?).

My husband and I have been camping at breakneck for 6 years now. The campground is beautiful, the atmosphere is relaxed. The owners are wonderful, welcoming people who keep the grounds well maintained and clean. There’s a nice mix of campsites, we prefer the more private, wooded spots. The creek at the bottom of the hill is a true hidden gem and our kids and dogs love splashing in the water to cool off on a hot day. This is by far our favorite place to camp and we have made hundreds of wonderful family memories at Breakneck campground!

Just pull in and grab some firewood 7.00 a 5gal bucket full and pick your site. there are 10 walk-in sites with 2 beauties down by the creek, 7 or so observation platforms you can camp on and to many to count car camping sites.

The owners are awesome and come around to collect fees in the evening with kids and dogs in tow. McConnlls mills park is 100 yards away and has approx, 30 miles of trails and part of the north country trail. there is rock climbing , rappelling, white water kayaking and fishing.

Moraine state park is 3 minutes away with lake Aurther for sailing ,canoeing, power boating, bike trails, frisbee golf coarse and swimming.
