Sun Pass Dispersed — Winema National Forest

Open Winema National Forest terrain near Sun Pass rises to around 5,250 feet, offering a welcome escape from the summer heat of the surrounding lowlands — a meaningful advantage in August when temperatures elsewhere in the region run considerably warmer. The terrain shifts between open sandy flats and pine-shaded pockets, giving campers a choice of sun exposure and some natural wind shelter. Access follows a long washboard dirt road in from Fort Klamath to the south; the final miles are rough enough to slow any vehicle down, and deeper sand farther from the road entrance warrants high-clearance. A trailhead down the road leads to the Pinnacles, the old east entrance corridor into Crater Lake National Park.
