Small, beautiful river access…

Easy road to get to this stretch of river, and lots of campgrounds along. As described, 4 drive-ins & 2 walk-ins. Stays in closer walk-in #5. Later learned some girls had used a drive-in spot just for parking 😡. One vault toilet in fair condition, trash. No potable water. Beautiful stretch of river with swimming hole & great rocks to jump from. Beautiful sand beach. Definitely NOT big-rig friendly. Posted ‘no alcohol’, but don’t know why.

Would not recommend

My friends and I wanted to stop at this campground in mid-July. We stayed an hour before leaving as we did not feel safe. Maybe it was simply bad luck but when we were there, two people were passed out in a car filled with trash. A young man was talking to himself and climbing on in own in the forest right behind our campervans. When we decided to drive away, we saw someone on the side of the road (5min outside of the campground) shooting up in the feet. We also tried Josephine campground nearby but did not stay either for similar reasons. We found a camping space at a private campground 15min away and spent the night there instead.

Beautiful Illinois river

River is a wonderful place to picnic and swim at during warmer months but is also known locally for high school students and young adults to come down and drink at. Other than the usually crowded beaches the area is beautiful. The road down to the campground can be fairly windy and bumpy as most of it is not paved.

Home!

This spot can get VERY crowded in the summer, go during the week if you plan to camp here. There are no trash receptacles, so please plan on packing everything out. Running water is not available. Alcohol is not permitted, and punishable by law. Campfires are also not permitted during wildfire season. Amazing spot, please respect the area and leave it clean.

Great Memorial Day Weekend

We had a wonderful family camping trip for the holiday weekend. I just wish they accepted reservations so you could leave home in confidence that you will have a spot. Great swimming hole and site number six is the biggest and best site.
