Boxcar Hill Campground

Off-highway vehicle enthusiasts find direct access to Oregon Dunes from this privately managed campground that functions primarily as a staging area for sand recreation. The facility accommodates RVs up to 75 feet with full hookups including electric, water, and sewer connections, though sites lack defined boundaries and are positioned close together.

"They really pack the campers in tight here so if you like extra space this isn't for you," notes one reviewer, highlighting the compact layout that prioritizes maximum capacity over privacy. The campground sits at the dunes' edge, where ATV and dirt bike activity continues late into the evening. Riders launch directly from their campsites onto the expansive sand terrain, making this location popular with groups bringing their own equipment or utilizing nearby rental services.

Sites provide no natural shade, and wind conditions can be significant given the exposed dune environment. The facility operates with gated access and electronic codes, with management maintaining strict policies regarding parking, checkout times, and guest protocols. Water views are available from various positions within the campground, though the location is inland rather than coastal.

Campers seeking quieter alternatives can explore Horsfall Campground or Bluebill Campground, both located within the nearby national forest system. This base works best for groups prioritizing immediate dune access over campground amenities.

Guests frequently mentioned excellent dune access as the main draw. However, several reviews cited concerns about tight site spacing, late-night noise from riders, and poor host interactions that detracted from the experience.

terrible camp hosts

it was supposed to be a vacation but could have been better after driving 9 hours to be received by the rudest camp hosts and then harrassed daily with mass texts of threats of being charged for extra car parking, too many cars parked, no parking by the bathroom, be sure to put the garbage in the right bin, check out time, don't share your gate code, gate code expiring so be out on time and it went on and on.  They will not work with you to move your site close to your group or try to keep you together, they just don't care, it is worse than self checkout at grocery store, they want to do no work and will just monitor their prescious gate to ensure that everyone uses it and it closes in between trailers, will never return and you shoudl find somewhere else to spend your time.

Great campground for dune access

Camped here in August 2020. Right at the edge of the dunes. They really pack the campers in tight here so if you like extra space this isn’t for you. Also there are people riding just behind the camp late into the night so may be hard to sleep for light sleepers.

Dune Lucky

The campground is merely a springboard for duning - and oh what a vast, lovely expanse it is.  Rentals, plenty of enthusiastic neighbors and tons of bright sand for both beginning and advanced riders.  There's no delineation between all the sites, and this isn't on the coastline, but there are plenty of amazing water views, nooks and crannies.  I dare you to pitch a tent, offer a bewildered "oh... I didn't know people duned here..." and get some free play time.
