The Bureau of Land Management operates this free campground along the Owyhee Wild and Scenic River, where campers park around a large circular area rather than designated sites. Most of the terrain slopes, but flatter spots next to the river fill quickly during peak season when rafters launch from this popular put-in point. Access requires navigating rough roads to reach the riverside location.
The area becomes crowded with boaters during summer months, though off-season visits offer more solitude. Basic amenities include toilets and picnic tables, with campfires and pets permitted. Verizon cellular service is unavailable, but satellite internet connections work reliably. Big rigs can access the area, and both drive-in and walk-in camping options are available year-round.
Description
This wild river corridor flows through southeastern Oregon from the Idaho/Oregon state line to Owyhee Reservoir. (It excludes the Rome Valley, which is a ranching and agricultural area.) Explore this National Wild and Scenic River by floating some of its 120 miles through rugged, spectacular canyonlands and ash flows. The river was included in the National Wild and Scenic River System in 1984 because of its outstanding scenic, recreational, geologic, wildlife, and cultural values.
