      Kiser Lake State Park Campground

Very surprised by this small campground!

Very small campground, not much privacy between the sites. But is very nice all around. Nice big lake, nice shower house, nice camp store. It has a nice beach. Very well maintained lake .

      Kiser Lake State Park Campground

      Quiet

The campground has no full hookups but does have electric. RV sites have a view of the lake. Sites are clean and paved. There is a new shower house that’s pretty nice, but the other bathrooms are pretty nasty. For $29 nightly it’s a good campground. They do things with kids on many weekends. You can also rent canoes or paddle boats. No motors permitted on the lake.

      Ouabache State Park Campground

      Camp sites are tiny

Camp sites are tiny. We had site 88 and it was supposed to be full shade. It was full sun and they have it set up so the camp side of the trailer faces the road. The fire pit is also three feet from the road. Who wants to have a fire next to the road?

      Ouabache State Park Campground

      Good trails

We enjoyed our stay here. The park has great trails for hiking and biking. The bison exhibit and ranger programs are great too. The campsites are variable, size and privacy definitely depends on the site you book. The potable water is brown and smelly.. be sure to bring your water filter! But we did enjoy our weekend here.

The filthiest toilet I have ever seen. Flies everywhere. Even down to site 120 where we stayed. Never again.

    Guide to St. Marys

Equestrian camping near St. Marys, Ohio centers around several public and private properties offering horseback riding opportunities within reasonable driving distance. Located in western Ohio's Auglaize County, this area features gently rolling terrain with a mix of open fields and wooded areas at elevations typically between 850-900 feet. The region experiences four distinct seasons with hot summers averaging 80-85°F and cold winters often dropping below freezing.

    What to do

Creek exploration: Kiser Lake State Park Campground provides natural water features where visitors can enjoy paddling activities without motor noise. As one camper notes, "We had a great time kayaking there. The lake was calm and everyone was very respectful of us in our kayaks."

Fire tower climbing: At Ouabache State Park Campground, riders can take breaks from horseback activities to enjoy other attractions. A visitor explains, "The bison enclosure is always fun to check out, and the last time we stayed I actually walked to the top of the restored fire tower to take in the view."

Seasonal events: Fall and Halloween bring special activities for families camping in the area. As Alexandra F. describes at Kiser Lake, "I went the first weekend in October so they had a lot of families there because they had all sorts of Halloween activities going on."

    What campers like

No-motor lake policy: Horse camping visitors appreciate the quiet atmosphere at nearby lakes. One Kiser Lake camper mentioned, "This park is known for the lake that is kayak and canoe friendly since it doesn't allow any kind of boat with a motor."

Bike-friendly trails: When taking breaks from horseback riding, campers enjoy alternative outdoor activities. A visitor to Ouabache State Park noted, "The paved bike trail in the park starts near the campground, and connects with a bike trail along the Wabash River that goes into nearby Bluffton, and is an easy ride."

Varied trail environments: The region offers diverse riding terrain within relatively short distances. At Ouabache, a camper observed, "There's a surprising variation between more deciduous and coniferous environments depending on the trail you choose."

    What you should know

Seasonal site conditions: Some camping areas can become problematic during wet weather. An Ouabache State Park visitor warned, "The camp sites are mostly spaced out for room, but some can get very wet and flooded during a nice rain."

Water quality concerns: When planning horse riding trips with overnight stays, prepare accordingly for water needs. An Ouabache camper advised, "The potable water is brown and smelly.. be sure to bring your water filter!"

Wildlife management: Horseback campers should secure food supplies properly as local wildlife can be persistent. One camper at Ouabache stated, "The raccoons were pretty annoying though," while others have reported issues with feral cats at certain locations.

    Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Multiple recreation options complement horseback riding for family groups. Andrea F. notes that Kiser Lake features "a beach, 2 playgrounds and several hiking trails. Just be careful if you hike with dogs since some trails intersect with a nature preserve which doesn't allow pets."

Weekend programming: Many parks offer structured activities for children. Andrew L. shares, "I like that they have activities throughout the day for kids on the weekends. Also have a nice camp store/marina with canoe and kayak rentals at a reasonable price."

Site selection strategy: Choose locations that balance privacy with convenience. One camper advises, "I'd pick a site along the perimeter or along the lake" to avoid the central areas that can feel overcrowded.

    Tips from RVers

Hookup limitations: Horse camping with RVs requires planning around available utilities. At Kiser Lake, campers report, "The campground has no full hookups but does have electric. RV sites have a view of the lake. Sites are clean and paved."

Winter facilities: For cold weather riding trips, some locations maintain year-round access. Lisa N. states about Ouabache, "Love this place for winter camping. The campground comfort stations are heated all winter long."

Campsite spacing: RVers with horse trailers should research site dimensions carefully. According to one Kiser Lake visitor, site 57 offers "awesome" lake views, while others note many sites are situated "in one big grassy field with no shade."
