Moccasin Branch Campground — Raven Rock State Park

The state park has excellent hiking trails and the RV park is located in an excellent location to use them.

The sites are huge, level, and clean. The bathhouse is clean and modern. While there aren’t many recreational amenities besides the hiking, the price makes this park an excellent value.

This is our favorite campground in the area. It is clean and quite with easy back in sites. The bathhouse is well maintained as is the camp road. We have stayed here during all four seasons and there isn't a bad time to stay. I can't say enough good things about this campground

The RV campground is well spaced and have full hookup. It was a great bathhouse that is kept very clean. Lots of hiking trails to explore and a very nice visitors center. The only negatives is that the RV campground is actually not in the park although only a .5 mile hike away.

Clandestine?  And Camping?!  Yeah, that's kind of what I thought too when I first saw this place.  To begin with, hats off to the great state Rangers in North Carolina who take real pride in their campgrounds and take really great care of the parks.  This was, by far, one of the cleanest, most well-organized, perfectly sign-posted and utterly trash-free state parks I have ever been too (and let's say that I've been to a few).  

In fact, this place was so incredibly well taken care of ... that I'm not sure I felt like I was actually in nature!  Is that even possible?  Well, let's just say that one of the biggest challenges I have with camping in the first place is convincing my family to come with me, as they aren't fans of bugs, getting dirty, sweating and especially .. public restrooms and shower facilities.  But they would be impressed with this place.

Located just due South of Raleigh-Durham area, you'll find Raven Rock State Park, that doesn't get as much recognition as a lot of the other SP's have bodies of water attached to them, like in and around Jordan Lake, Falls Lake or further afield Lake Kerr.  That aside, and back to this particular campground, if you're looking for something that's a bit off the beaten path, but that offers a completely different camping experience, then I would strongly encourage you to come check out this place.  Amenities are standard, but as with everything here, it's either brand new or completely spartan!  Add on top of this that there's a number of really amazing guest cottages (think little log cabins, but modern), then this SP is definitely setting the pace for the rest of the state in terms of quality control on their campgrounds.

Very clean quiet amazing trails worth the trip

This is a new and clean campground. Very nice rangers monitor the campground and are extremely helpful. Each site is large and well spaced out from other campers. Most RV sites are gravel with a fire pit, picnic table and a gravel tent pad beside it. The bathhouse was clean and well maintained. Their RV sites are full hookup which is great for a state park. Water pressure was excellent. Primitive tent sites and cabins were available. The campground is walking distance to Raven Rock trails and you get a free walk up pass to get in. We had a very good time and will definitely go back.

The staff is amazing. All facilities were super clean. I suggest campsite #23. Lots of hiking and biking trails !

Great place to hike, fish, and camp with the family.

The trails are nice and short, not too much room for extra exploration. Best advice is there are some big rocks in the river at various locations that you can lay on and take a nap. Super comfy and the water is also pretty shallow. Great place to get wet. Never camped here before, only day trips.

Not crowded, nice selection of trails, plenty of fishing on the Cape Fear, woodland creatures abound.

It is a place of beauty and next to cape fear river ,Has plenty of places to hike to and to camp.

The sites here are great and the hike in is not bad at all. Well spaced and maintained. The vistors center is always super clean and everyone from rangers to staff are really friendly. Great spot for day or over night.

We brought our dog on our hike. The trails are easily followed and they include long and short Trails for your enjoyment. great day trip.

Great trails for hiking! The park is really well maintained. There is a ranger station with water fountains and clear bathrooms. There also is an outhouse by the campgrounds. The campsites are pretty big, we were able to fit a 3 person and 2 person tent no problem. You can't bring your own fire wood and can't cut trees down for firewood so you can't really get a great firing going. The hike out is awesome, you follow the river all the way back to the parking lot. The hike was a little for strenuous than we thought it was going to be! We had a great time!

Great day hiking trails with some nice river scenery.

Spent many nights camping at Raven Rock. There are quite a few different campsites to choose from. There is the group site which accommodates a large group. The Canoe camp site is for the person brave enough to challenge the mighty Cape Fear River. There are also a few campsites further from the parking area. The trails are great for day hikes also. You can also swim in the Fish Traps, which is a unique cluster of rocks on the river. This place is must visit if you are ever in the Sandhills of NC.

We hiked in from the parking lot too one of the canoe in sites on the river. I loved all the trails, mainly the one that goes from the campsite I was on to the river where thereally is natural waterslide. This is a very pretty state Park, OK to hike with children. I brought both of mine but we do a lot of primitive camping. So we are used to different terrain, and no bathrooms.

There are some great hikes on the loop trails that run along the Cape Fear River. Raven Rock itself is pretty cool and worth the hike.
