Creek side camping gem

Stonefly is a true gem! We parked with van doors opened to the bubbling creek and had the natural white noise as a backdrop all night. Very few bugs with cooler temps. Watched the fly fisherman on the bank catch a few rainbow trout. Chatted with camp neighbors and yes—the bathrooms are thoughtfully…

Camping in the mountains

Lovely woody and grassy field campground with only electric at our site. The sunrise is beautiful on the big field. The sites are well spaced and fairly level. The bath house had clean and private bathing rooms with great hot water and pressure. There is a place to wash dishes outside as well.…

Beautiful!

This was my first-ever camping trip and I’m glad that it was here. We stayed at site 11 in location 2 on the Lake James campgrounds; it’s a paddle-in-only location. Getting there required canoeing in, which was easy for us to do on the lake’s dock. (We rented canoes from CBS a ways away.) The trip…

Close to Asheville, off the beaten path

I liked the parking right next to the river. Remote and secluded even with other campers staying here. Bathhouse on site, a short walk from our site. They have some electric access but not the type an RV plugs into.

Check your GPS, ours was off a little on finding the exact address.

Excellent location, views, & amenities for tent campers

We stayed at Tent Site #3 in late May and early June. We have stayed at the campground twice before. We love coming back here because of the great amenities, location, and access to activities.

  1. The amenities are great for the kind of tent camping we like to do: electric & water at each…
  • Sitting on the picnic table & cooking dinner at the fire ring
  • You pull your car right up to the site (except for site #2). Water and electricity available here too.
  • Making breakfast on picnic table. Tent site #4's picnic table was not level, but all of the other tent sites seemed to have the picnic table level on the ground.

Serenity....

Took awhile to get to the actual camping site but MAN - it was sooo wotht it!! The campsite is nicely nestled in nature and very well kept. Having a nice hot shower in the morning was also super nice! Rater spouts close by was also an additional plus. I will definitely recommend this campground and…

Fun... Enough

Just a very small campground, seems to be family friendly with just enough amenities. There's a playground, sand boxes and paved semi level RV pads. I wouldn't come back but the place is very quiet. If you're into that...

Wooded sites along the river

This is a beautiful campground located alongside a stream with trout fishing. Site#2 in particular is susceptible to flash flooding, but if the forecast is for dry weather, it would be hard to beat this site. Opening delayed in 2021 because of difficulty getting a campground host, but volunteers…

Infrastructure decline means limited primitive camping

Grindstone campground is a large, primitive NF site that will only have a single loop(Opossum) open with no water or electricity for 2021 and the foreseeable future.  I spoke with volunteers who stated there are extensive infrastructure needs and no funds to complete the repairs. So, if you have a…

Wild horses, beautiful trails and views

This was my third time here, but the first time in 25+ years. This is a wonderful state park located near the high point of Virginia, Mt Rogers, and as such, it is a popular destination for hikers. Oh, and there is that other natural attraction, the wild ponies that roam the mountains. It’s not…

Sites very close together. Bath House pretty nice though.

The sites are very close together. The tent sites have a sand base to the site and sand gets everywhere! We were across from the bath house and the bath house was nice and clean but kinda small. Friendly atmosphere and it appears that most people are long term campers.

Nice Campground near Asheville

I actually had a better experience then I expected! This was my first experience with KOA and I had mixed reviews. Pros: Staff was super friendly, it was so nice to be assorted to my site at check and to have help backing in. I requested that since I have a pop-up camper and no bathroom that I be…

Good stay for the price

We stayed 2 nights in our 17' travel trailer and enjoyed clean bathrooms and hot showers, plus our site #2 had a small deck that came in handy when we were able to move the picnic table under our camper awning to avoid a light rain. Don't miss Linville Falls, but especially don't miss the drive up…
