They're beautiful, fun to find and the whole family can mine for them at the Herkimer Diamond Mines, part of this KOA. Actually quartz crystals, the stones were faceted by nature half a billion years ago. Here, experience Upstate New York's largest jewelry store, museum, a fossil-and-gemstone sluicing area, "Randy" the authentic dinosaur skull and a new activity center. Stay in themed cottages and lodges (solar-powered, astronomy, robotics and more!). Enjoy a canal boat ride with Lil' Diamond III at the Herkimer Marina. Go through a lock that lifts you up and down 20 feet on the Erie Canal. Cherish your heroes at Cooperstown's Baseball Hall of Fame. Alongside KOA's campsites, West Canada Creek offers trout and fun for canoeists, tubers and kayakers. Dine at KOA's on-site cafe, pavilion or restaurant. Join in the many activities during Herkimer Diamond Mines' 61st anniversary.
Nice place. Very clean cabins, store disc golf course. Across the road from a do it yourself quartz mine. Plenty of things to do including tubing the west Canada river. Easy in easy out for the tubing. Had a great time.
This campground, a KOA campground, offers all you could need and more. From dry tenting sites, RV hookup sites, to elaborate and science-based cabins. They offer a children's playground, pool, little grocery store, volleyball area, and of course, the Herkimer Diamond Mine and restaraunt, right across the street.
Keeping in mind , it is a busy family resort during prime season and holidays, so if you're looking for a quiet, non-crowded location, this may not be the place for you (unless you try it in offseason), but the noise did not seem too bad in the evening, and the times Ive been there, most campers did seem respectful of each other.
There is a beautiful river where some of the sites are located next to, where you can wade into, kayak , tube down, or just sit on the bank and watch the local wild life swim by . There are bathrooms and showers, although not the cleanest I've ever witnessed, but they are sufficient and helpful if needed.
Some of the prices can be a little costly on some of the sites, but there are cheaper options on other sites as well, and with the diamond mine nearby, and all the activities that the park offers, it is definitely a park to visit, especially if you have children.
All the amenities we wanted, a river for tubing, and easy drive from home. This was part of our gemstone trip which including sluicing, diamond mining, visiting the gemstone museum, then we stopped at Howe Caverns on the way home. Tubing was the big hit with the kids. Sites were large. Very clean.
We spent three nights here. The staff is fabulous. The mines are so much fun. Some of the sites are crowded but each site has plenty of space. The whole park is well maintained. Lots of room to walk our dogs. We will visit again.
Like all KOAs this one is very well manicured, there are a lot of activities for kids and a river runs through it so you can tube from one side of the campground to another. The campground is also right across the street from one of the Herkimer diamond mines, so it’s convenient if that is your intended purpose.
Clean …clean bathrooms …large sites lots of fun activities for the kids fishing and tubing on the creek…well stocked store reasonable prices…pool is clean well maintained…pet friendly…enclosed play area for pets…nice playground for the kids….a really nice place to camp
Very beautiful campground with tons of planned activities for the kids. Outdoor pool and clean shower/bathrooms. Lots of grass and shade. Very nice sites that are easy to get in/out of. Well stocked camp store.
This campground is great, sites are spaced out very nicely, lots of things to do for everyone, a pool for the kids, shuffle board, disc golf, tubing, everything is organized, and nice and clean ! Going back this year again! The diamond mines are very cool also, I found some excellent diamonds!
We stayed her for the first time and compared to most KOAs we have stayed at this one was far better. I have a full review on my blog openboxreviews
Cons: low water pressure at our site
Firewood is expensive and you don't get much
Sites are close together and little to no privacy
Pet friendly- has K-9 area for dogs to run off leash and do agility course
Lots of activities
Almost all camping sites are on the water
You can go tubing from one end of the creek to the other- bring your own tube
Across the street from Herkimer Diamond Mine
We had lots of fun, we spent one day at the mines and the next day we tried to do as many activities as we could- wiffle ball, made pinwheels, volleyball with a giant volleyball, bingo, family relay, ice cream social and dance party. Great time, clean campground, great staff.
