Tubing down the West Canada Creek is the main draw at Herkimer Diamond Mine KOA, where many sites sit directly along the water and the creek runs shallow enough for kids but moves fast enough in spots to make the float worthwhile. Bring your own tube or pick one up at the camp store. Hawks circle overhead on warm afternoons, and the sound of the water carries into camp at night. The creek access is free, and reviewers consistently describe it as the reason they extended their stays.
Across the street, the Herkimer Diamond Mine gives campers a hands-on activity beyond the water. Visitors can spend hours with a hammer looking for the double-terminated quartz crystals the region is known for, or simply browse the crystals already excavated at the on-site stands. A restaurant operates near the mine on most days, though hours can vary. Back at the campground, there's a pool, playground, basketball court, volleyball, and a dog run with an agility course. The camp store is well-stocked with food, supplies, and souvenirs.
Sites range from dry tent spots to full RV hookups with electric, water, and sewer connections, with a maximum RV length of 90 feet. The campground accommodates rigs up to that length, though the turn-off from the road comes up quickly and is notably sharp. Several reviewers mention that the approach involves winding, smaller roads that can catch first-timers off guard. Sites are generally level but close together, with limited privacy between neighbors. During peak summer weekends and holidays, the campground fills up and noise levels rise accordingly; shoulder season visits tend to be quieter. "The noise did not seem too bad in the evening," notes Darby R., and most campers appear to respect quiet hours.
Bathrooms and showers are on-site, though reviews on cleanliness are mixed. Firewood is available for purchase but runs pricier than some campers expect. The campground is about seven miles from campgrounds near Herkimer for those who want to compare options in the area, and the nearby Ace of Diamonds Mine & Campground offers a similar mining-focused experience just up the road. Reservations are available and worth booking ahead for summer weekends. Pets are welcome throughout the season, which runs May through October.
