Lincoln National Forest manages Upper Bonito Dispersed Recreation Area, a forested camping area outside Nogal that runs along a small creek in the mountains above Ruidoso. Sites are first-come, first-served and spread out enough that campers with kids report plenty of open space to move around. The access road is dirt and rocky in sections, with some washboard stretches that get dusty in dry conditions. Plan for a drive of some length before reaching the sites.
The creek is a consistent presence here, though water levels vary by season. One visitor noted it "didn't have much water in it" during an October trip. Fire rings appear at most sites, and the area has toilets, which is not a given for dispersed camping. Deer and wild horses have been spotted by multiple visitors. Nearby trails, including the Big Bonito and Argentina trails, give the area value as a base for day hiking. Lincoln National Forest South Fork Campground and Monjeau Campground are both within a few miles for campers considering the broader range of sites around Lincoln National Forest.
Noise at night is worth noting. One reviewer reported sounds of splitting wood or hammering after 9:30 p.m., along with dogs barking. Summer weekends bring more traffic and less privacy. No pets are allowed. Campers planning a winter visit should be aware the area can become snowed in. If the road conditions and first-come setup work for your group, this spot rewards those willing to do a little exploring to find a good site.
