Difficult to find, but very convenient once you’re there

Our biggest issue with this campsite was that it was extremely difficult to find. I’m not sure if the coordinates aren’t accurate or what, but it would help to have more signs along the highway showing where to turn. We passed the turn in at least twice and had to ask a cop at the inspection point before we finally found it. If you’re traveling in the dark, good luck. Best advice is to enter from the west and turn before you get to the air force base, but after the missile range. There aren’t many roads that turn off the highway so chances are you’ll pick the right one eventually haha. Once you find the turn in, there’s a cattle grate that is very rough to get over, but manageable. We camped right next to the water which was gorgeous, especially during sunrise. There was plenty of space when we went, only two other RVs staying that we could see. Not too much noise like I’ve seen other people mention, only a little aircraft noise every now and then. We saw lots of wildlife in the area. The lake is pretty stinky, as a matter of fact the cop called it “stinky lakes”, but it wasn’t terrible. We only stayed overnight and went to White Sands NP the following morning. Perfect for anyone looking to stay for a night, and drive to the park. The park is maybe 5 minutes down the road, extremely convenient! Overall for a free site, we had a great stay!

It's ok for a night

The coordinates are not exact. It's a little west of the air force base. Right next to white sands.

Good dispersed sites

Not a bad dispersed site but not a great maintained road. Our rig is 35ish feet and we were okay getting off the road to find a spot, but the road is a little washed out and tight in places. You don’t get much privacy either. But pros are the pretty lake (don’t swim in it!) and that it’s 5 minutes from white sands.

Still open!

Despite the warning that it's closed for the season there were plenty of other folks spending the night here. A bit busy but spots are well spread out and the view over the lake is worth it! Minutes from white sands np and just what I needed for a nice overnight on my way west.

Perfect for visiting White Sands

I stayed here 6 nights in Feb of 2019 so I could catch sunrise/sunset at White Sands. You are on a military base but signage says your welcome. Boondocking. I was in a campervan. I have to say that there's enough room for 20 campers and RVs however, the big RVs make a point of taking up way more space than they need. After my 2nd night there it became apparent that it was to push smaller rigs into the less desirable areas away from the lake. One guy with a micro teardrop pushed in between where there was ample room and all hell broke loose.

Frequently Asked Questions

What amenities are available at Holloman AFB FamCamp?

Holloman AFB FamCamp offers basic boondocking amenities with no hookups. The campground has space for approximately 20 campers and RVs, with sites spread out around a lake offering scenic views. While the campground is located on military property, it's open to visitors. The area is primarily self-sufficient camping, so come prepared with your own water, power, and waste management solutions. The nearby lake provides a pleasant backdrop, though swimming is not permitted. Be aware that the road access can be somewhat rough in places.

How close is Holloman AFB FamCamp to White Sands National Park?

Holloman AFB FamCamp is extremely convenient to White Sands National Park, located just minutes away. The proximity makes it an ideal base camp for visitors planning to experience both sunrise and sunset at the park. The campground is positioned west of the air force base, right next to White Sands. This strategic location allows campers to easily access the national park's stunning white gypsum dunes without a long commute.

What is the difference between Holloman AFB FamCamp and Cannon AFB FamCamp?

Holloman AFB FamCamp is a primitive boondocking site situated near White Sands National Park with no hookups but offers lake views and natural surroundings. The campground features dispersed camping with sites that lack privacy but provide scenic vistas. In contrast, Cannon AFB FamCamp typically offers more developed camping facilities as is common with military FamCamps. While both serve military personnel and eligible visitors, they differ significantly in amenities, location, and nearby attractions. For specific information about Cannon's facilities, contact their recreation office directly.

Is there an RV dump station at Holloman AFB FamCamp?

No, Holloman AFB FamCamp does not have an RV dump station on-site. This is a primitive boondocking location without developed RV facilities or hookups. RVers should plan to arrive with empty tanks and be prepared to manage waste until reaching an appropriate dump facility elsewhere. The campground is suitable for self-contained camping, but larger RVs (35+ feet) should exercise caution on the somewhat rough access roads. For dump station options, check with the Holloman Air Force Base facilities or nearby developed campgrounds in Alamogordo.
