Extremely rural. Lots of wildlife.

This spot is not easy to get to. You need the proper type of vehicle (off road with clearance). It is dry as a bone, but beautiful nonetheless. There are large trees and a perfect river. We saw a wolf, wild hogs, and signs of bears (droppings). If you want to connect with the wild, this is the place for you. As long as you know how to handle wildlife in a respectful way you will have nothing to worry about. The only drawback is that there is charred forest on either side of the campground. Though the campground itself is like a little oasis. Highly recommend visiting here. It gets VERY cold at night during early summer, so make sure to go prepared.

Ben Lily Campground

Campsite is clean with bathrooms. Easily accessible by 2wd vehicle. Benches and fire pits at each site. Close to willow creek where fishing for gila trout is possible. Creek is a bit shallow and damaged due to erosion and recent flooding however gila trout can be found in larger pools around.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Ben Lilly Campground located and how do I get there?

Ben Lilly Campground is located near Willow Creek in the Gila National Forest area. Access requires careful planning as the road conditions can be challenging. You'll need a vehicle with good clearance and off-road capability to reach this remote destination. The route is not suitable for standard passenger cars, especially during or after wet weather. The campground's secluded location makes it perfect for wilderness enthusiasts seeking to disconnect, but be prepared for potentially rough road conditions on your way in.

What amenities are available at Ben Lilly Campground?

Ben Lilly Campground offers basic amenities that include clean campsites with benches and fire pits at each site. Bathrooms are available for campers. The campground is situated near Willow Creek, providing opportunities for fishing and water access. The area features large trees that offer natural shade. While the facilities are minimal, they provide the essentials needed for a comfortable wilderness camping experience. The natural surroundings are the main attraction, with wildlife viewing opportunities including possible sightings of wolves, wild hogs, and bears.

Is Ben Lilly Campground suitable for RVs or just tent camping?

Ben Lilly Campground is primarily suitable for tent camping rather than RVs. The access road requires off-road vehicles with good clearance, making RV access extremely difficult or impossible in most cases. The remote location and challenging terrain are not conducive to larger camping vehicles. If you're planning to visit with anything larger than a small, high-clearance camper van, you should consider alternative campgrounds. Tent campers who appreciate primitive settings will find this location ideal, particularly those with 4x4 vehicles capable of navigating rough forest roads.
