mescalero sands rec area

Accessible via paved roads, Mescalero Sands Recreation Area provides three sites surrounded by sand dunes in southeastern New Mexico. Each site includes a covered picnic table, charcoal grill, and trash service, with big rig access available. The campground allows pets, campfires, and alcohol while maintaining ADA accessibility.

Sand dunes extend in all directions for off-highway vehicle use. Campers report excellent stargazing conditions and notable sunset views across the desert landscape. The area sees light visitation, though summer temperatures can reach uncomfortable levels. Cell service remains available throughout the campground, and Mescalero Sands North Dunes OHV Area sits less than a mile north for additional OHV opportunities.
