Sitting about 12 miles east of campgrounds around Roswell, Alamo Road Camp is a dispersed BLM site on flat, open desert terrain that draws tent campers, van dwellers, and RVs of all sizes. The access road is unpaved and potholed along its full length, though campers report that four-wheel drive is not required as long as you drive slowly. Rain changes the equation entirely. The fine desert dust turns to deep mud after a hard storm, and some visitors have encountered mosquitoes in the days following wet weather.
Sites are not marked. Campers pull off into cleared areas that show prior use, and the spacing between neighbors tends to run a few football fields or more. Randall G. notes it is "located directly across from Bottomless Lakes State Park," which gives a useful landmark for navigation since the turnoff onto Alamo Road is not signed. Wind is a consistent factor, especially in spring, and the flat, open layout offers no natural windbreak. Rangers check the area a couple of times per week.
Cell coverage is reliable here. T-Mobile and Verizon both get solid marks from reviewers. One practical note: a shooting range on Department of Defense land sits roughly two miles north, and gunshots are audible during daylight hours. Campers are advised to stay south of the zigzag road sign. Nearby dispersed options include Alamo Road Dispersed to the south and BLM Dispersed near Topless Lakes off Alamo Road to the northwest. This camp works best for self-sufficient campers comfortable with primitive conditions and variable desert weather.
