West Maxwell WMA

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

A small parking lot at the end of a dirt road off the interstate, West Maxwell WMA sits within the West Maxwell Wildlife Management Area outside Brady, Nebraska, managed by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission at no cost. The site is compact. Two parking spots serve as the camping area, positioned beside a pond ringed with cattails, with views of surrounding cornfields and open grassland. Daytime use is common, as local anglers regularly fish the pond, but overnight visitors often find themselves alone.

Highway noise is the most consistent detail across reviews. The interstate is audible throughout the night, though several campers note it fades into background noise once traffic thins after dark. The pond draws the most attention for fishing, and Matthew B. notes it is "beautiful little pond for fishing if you have a kayak," with two wheelchair-accessible piers on the cattail-lined bank. Bullfrogs are loud after dark. Spring visitors should check themselves and pets for ticks.

The access road is bumpy enough that slow speeds are advisable, and trailers up to a small or medium size can navigate the turnaround. Cell coverage is workable, with Verizon and AT&T both reporting moderate to good signal, stronger near the highway side of the lot. T-Mobile also has some reception. Nearby, Box Elder Canyon WMA and NC River Ranch provide additional free or low-cost options in the same corridor. West Maxwell works best as a one-night stop for solo travelers, tent campers, or small rigs moving through central Nebraska who want a free, functional pull-off with water nearby.

Easy overnighter

This site was easy to find late at night, nobody else nearby so a great option for me. A small parking lot/turnaround right by a pond. Expect to hear bullfrog noises in the night!

Great Small Spot

1 mile from the highway and great reception for AT&T and Verizon. You can hear the highway traffic slightly but it is a nice place. I would stay here again!

Easy spot off interstate

It’s a very small area right next to the interstate. Cute pond though and felt safe. Be wary of ticks during spring though. Both dogs picked up a couple of hitchhikers

Awesome, free camping spot!

Saw the reviews and thought the pictures look great and sure enough this is a little hidden gem. It is right off the freeway, but we didn’t even notice the freeway noise. Honestly there’s a few of acres of corn field and also a pond. It’s a beautiful view and a great nice sleep!

Peaceful spot by a lake all to ourselves. After dark highway traffic subsided and we were able to sleep soundly. There is some t mobile reception.

Cute camp with highway white noise

Cute little park off the highway. 2 sites are available. I wouldn't haul a trailer into the park, but it's perfect for a small rv or tent camping. Allot of highway noise, but it's good white noise to fall asleep after you get used to it.

Easy to get to, right off the highway

Beautiful little pond for fishing if you have a kayak. The bank is surrounded by cattails with a nice ramp and only two wheelchair accessible peers to fish from.

The highway is about a half mile away and the noise does not stop. That being said, if I’m ever back this way, I would stay here without a second thought.

SiteThere’s only two sites to camp, one is large and the other small. We stayed at the small one.

Chill spot for a night

The spot is a small parking lot down a dirt road. It has nice views of the lake and ample places to park. There are some houses nearby and people use the lake for fishing, so there were people during the day! I was the only one there overnight.

Moderate noise from the highway and minor noise from nearby houses.

A fair amount of bugs -- but also hundreds of Lightning Bugs by the lake. Overall, a good spot to spend one night but less ideal for hanging out at camp.

Medium coverage on Verizon -- it better the closer you get to the highway/lake side of the lot.

Comfortable Spot

Nice little spot to stay off the lake. Really good spot to fish, lots of them just swimming around close to the top. Only two complaints we have are the noise from the highway, and the gravel road was very bumpy (we went 20mph or less the whole way).
